the irony is that doing this sort of makes me pretentious, too.

What is Kevin Spacey's last line in American Beauty?

I agree wholeheartedly with the James Joyce thing.

had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined my street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will ( ... )

Specifically the bit where he says "it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world." I mean...really. people who overuse the word "beauty" in general piss me off, but that's the worst-case scenario.

Oh, come on - where's the fun in running an esoteric operating system if you can't smile smugly when the newest WMF vulnerability starts making the rounds?

Of course, Linux evangelists piss the hell out of me, but self-righteous users?

there are militant atheists? what does a militant atheist do exactly?

militant atheists are the flip-side of evangelists. they go around scoffing at god and making people feel stupid for believing in him. i'm highly suspicious of anyone who tries to force a belief that can't be tested on anyone else. they're either a self-righteous idiot, or they have an agenda.

What about militant agnostics? 'I don't know and neither do you.' -- is that acceptable? =)

"i don't know" is fine. "neither do you" is only acceptable if they're trying to push their beliefs onto you. if they're just going about their happy christian/jewish/muslim/hindu/zorastrian way, let them be.

Pretentious people? How about the guys who buy Porsche's, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis, and refuse to ever take them to an autocross or track event? A lot of them are afraid of getting their egos shattered when a lowly Mini Cooper or Honda Civic turns a faster time because they can't drive. Using these machines exclusively to pick up members of the opposite sex is just... so wrong ( ... )
