Maximum Ride fandom, I've been holding this in for a long time. I think you need to hear this.
I know most of you absolutely adore the pairing Fax. I don't mind, Fax is a perfectly good pairing between two perfectly good characters, and I don't mind reading it when it's original and well-written. There's a lot of Fax, obviously, most of, if not all, of the stories revolve around this pairing. Many of them are quite bad, but there are some excellent ones that I truly enjoy, with good characterization, good conventions, and excellent writing.
When I read the books, I fell in love with a completely scorned pairing known as Mari(Actually, it was nonexistent in the fandom when I arrived, so I made up the name with the help of a few of my fellow shippers.) Mari is the pairing of a fourteen-year-old girl who has been genetically experimented on and has wings and a seven-year old man named Ari who has been experimented on, having an adult body with an adult mind and adult urges mixed with those of a child. He, too, has been experimented on, and can turn into a wolf and has wings as well. His father was one of the people who experimented on both of them, and freed the girl Max and a few other mutants. Ari was left behind, and as a result, hates Max for being better and taking his father away.
The possibility that Max and Ari are siblings(At one point when it appears Ari is dead, his father screams at Max 'You killed your own brother!') has been discussed, but not confirmed. Ari has created a plan to kidnap Max and take her to a special place where she will live with him, rub his wings, and be his 'special friend'. He describes her as having beautiful brown eyes, a perfect face, hair that forms a halo, and being 'strong and beautiful and fierce'. He also tells her, after she cuts her hair, that he liked it long, that she was pretty in her sleep, and that he 'liked 'em feisty'. After seeing her kiss another guy, he morphs into a wolf and bites himself to release the pain.
Basically, people don't like this pairing because it cannot be a happy pairing, period, and because Ari is described as having 'oddly stretched, unattractive features', and is unstable. It's original, twisted, and depressing, that's why I love it.
Total, there's twelve die-hard Mari shippers, including myself. Some other people in the fandom enjoy Mari, although they don't write it. Most Mari fics(There are eleven fics dedicated purely to it) do quite well, and are fairly well received, because they're all well-written and unique. I'm the proud author of four of these.
Many people make their unofficial 'signatures' things like "Faxness forever!" or "Fax is love!" or even "FAXFAXFAXFAXFAXFAXFAX!!!!!" As incredibly irritating as this is, I can deal with it.
Some people started saying things like,"Who doesn't like Fax? I mean, everyone likes Fax!" or "Fax is the best pairing ever!" Once again, still obnoxious, but tolerable.
But today, it just went overboard.
Some anonymous reviewers have begun sending reviews to Mari fics/Mari writers with fics for other pairings(Including myself) with huge rants about how Mari is evil, how we are perverts for writing it, how there is a special place in hell reserved for us, etc. They've also spammed our email accounts, and are in general harassing us.
About half the fandom is upset with us. The other half is encouraging them and finds it amusing.
So, Maximum Ride fandom, please, please try to be more open-minded. Otherwise, you're a great fandom. Don't make me leave you. Please.
