Cleaning product-fueled ramblings

I feel extremely productive. I just scrubbed down the entire bathroom (oh, did it need it. eew.); mopped the hardwood floors in my room, the hallway, and the living room; swiffered the lino in the kitchen; and unpacked a bunch of my stuff ( Read more... )

Is there no air-conditioning up there?!?

John and I don't have central air in our house--just window units. We can't run all three at the same time, or the circuit blows. :(

Central air is very rare up here. I haven't had it in any of my three apartments. The only place I've been able to enjoy air conditioning up here are work and school. And I guess retail stores. I could buy a window unit, but those things are annoying and heavy to move. blech.

Mine wasn't too bad to install--John, Jeffrey and Alan installed it after midnight on the first day I moved in, and it didn't seem too difficult.
How long are the summers up there?

They're usually from around June until the end of September.

I think it was one of the biggest shocks in my life to move to "the big city" and discover... no one has air conditioning. Granted, Seattle didn't exactly need it until recently, but... y'know. Countdown to box fan in seven days...

Also, I can finally answer your Stardust question from many moons ago, now that I actually know a little about the film. As any book lover, my knee-jerk reaction is always to panic whenever changes occur between the book and film, but after seeing some well-done changes (cutting some of the admittedly beautiful chaff in the LOTR films, Fight Club being much better than the original novel) and reading that Neil is thrilled with the film (if not the advertising), I can't wait to see it.

Yeah, I guess it's sort of the same up here...it's cold for a slightly larger portion of the year, so they think central air is not worth it. But where there's central air, there is also central heating. So, I don't know. I guess in Seattle the temperatures don't go to quite the extremes, though. How cold does it get in the winter out there?

I just reread Stardust, so I'm really psyched to see the movie. I'm only a little wary about the changes they might make (from the trailers Yvaine seems a little too Luna Lovegood-y), but overall I think it'll be good. I hadn't heard about Gaiman's opinion, but I suppose if the writer is pleased, that's about as good as it's going to get. Now you want to talk about freaking out about a novel to film? What the crap are they going to do with The Golden Compass now that they've taken out the religious parts? (Have you read that, btw? You'd really like it.)

I have to fold on comparing temperatures, admittedly. It gets no hotter than the mid-80s and no colder than the mid-30s, usually. Oddly enough, I do have heating, although the thermostat definitely does not work. In order to avoid turning my apartment into a sauna, I have to run the thing manually and intermittently, which leads to waking up to a freezing-ass studio every winter morning.

You'll be pleased to know that the trailers, particularly Yvaine's portrayal in them, have been Neil's main complaint; he finds it curious that the trailers play up the stereotypical, generic fantasy adventure/romantic elements instead of focusing on the unique bits of the story, like the ill tempered, most definitely not-a-shrinking-violet damsel in distress. He explicitly said he was confused why the editing in the trailers conveys the idea of a film much different than the one you'd actually see in theaters, so there's that.

Sadly, I had that series on my list to read this summer, but choose Foucault's Pendulum for that slot instead. I ( ... )

Yeah, there's lots of radiator heat here, which doesn't really operate via thermostat. Usually when it gets too hot I have to open the windows so there's some kind of balance.

That's good to know about the trailers. I think I'm going to see the movie this weekend. You should definitely make some time for the His Dark Materials series. It's one of my favorites. How was Focault's Pendulum? I have The Name of the Rose waiting on my bookshelf, but I haven't worked myself up to it yet.

no, Rachel Weiss wasn't in this one. I think you'd Sunshine though! If it comes to Bama, you should go see it.

I haven't seen The Fountain yet, but it's on my Netflix. I think it'll be great--same director as Pi and Requiem for a Dream.

I'll have to put House of 9 on my queue.
