I have to wonder....if the majority of the stranded in New Orleans were of another race -- would FEMA still be complaining about having to rescue them during "urban warfair ( Read more... )

I'm sure discrimination is part of the issue of the extrememly slow and inadequate response to rescuing the stranded in New Orleans. I also was told by Justin that New Orleans was going to increase their levy protection system (which would have greatly lessened the effect of Katrina), but only had 20% of the funds.... the other 80% being diverted to the war in Iraq. A significant portion of Louisiana's national guard, the citizens we count on to help in natural disasters, is also now serving Iraq ( ... )

Yeah, they've been talking about this quite a bit on CNN. And a friend of mine who's a news junkie did some looking through news archives and pulled up this:

It appears that the money has been moved in the president’s budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that’s the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can’t be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us.

What worries me, Nat, is that there will still be people out there willing themselves ignorant on parts of the disaster. Specifically the fact that the poor were left to fend for themselves while the well-to-do had at least an oppertunity to escape. People want to ignore the class system in america, ignore the old and sick, quite frankly may people only acnowledge the folks who look like Lindsay Lohan and have the money of Paris Hilton. It just disgusts me.....that and the fact that I had to pay 80 dollars to buy a replacement AC adapter for my computer disgusts me.

Are you going to the equal justice works job fair thing that was in the docket?

I just think it's pretty awful that people are willing to live in the dark like that- pretending that if they don't look at a problem it will go away. The administration needs to stop relying on volunteers (red cross, churches, etc.) to make things happen. We're the richest country in the world- we should be on top of our shit when responding to disasters or when implementing programs to combat poverty. Arggg.

I'm thankful that this aspect of it is being talked about at least. I've heard the race/class take on it being discussed here and there in the news. What's really fucking obnoxious is the CYA action coming from some of the officials, talking about how the problems have been compounded by "all the people who chose to stay in New Orleans" (emphasis added) despite the evacuation warnings.

A big fuck you to you, buddy. A lot of peope COULDN'T LEAVE. Not everyone had transportation, not everyone could move, not everyone had anywhere to go. So a big huge fuck you.

I'm infuriated...but my little old po-dunk town managed to raise over a half million in 24 hours ...and thats just the radio stations who joined together to raise funds.

Do you agree with President Bush that there should be "zero tolerance" for all looters? Meaning that a mother taking bread and a can of soda (since there is no water) for her children should be shot?

I agree, if you are taking a TV...thats wrong. But if you are taking medicine, food, water, liquids of any sort beyond booze, etc ...then you should be applauded since the Federal Government isnt doing a damn thing to help the majority of the victims.

The rapist you may shoot at will, sir.

But thats not what I asked you. I asked if you agreed with the Presidents view of "zero tolerance". No...Ray with the TiVo is NOT taking that to feed his baby....so I said I draw the line there. But even if you're taking the food for yourself.....so what?! They have NOTHING, they own NOTHING, its hot -- there is no water, and no food. Would you starve to death to not "loot" I sure as hell wouldnt. FURTHER, for a while the media was assisting in the negative portrail of African-Americans by labeling them looters but white folks who took bread as "finders". I'm sure that white guy just happen to find that bread floating in isle five with a paid recipt attached to it ( ... )

What gets me are all the fucks saying that that New Orleans deserves to be "wiped off the map for harboring fag liberals."

We started a rescue relief donation program at work yesterday and the fucks, not the bucks, are pouring in.
