Well there is, of course, the Duomo (Domo) and the Baptistry (Battistero) in front of it. The Domo is generally free to go into but the Battistero is 6 or 8 Euro, I believe. Florence is pretty small, so I'd just do some walking around. My favorite places to go were the Palazzo Vecchio, which you will be right next to, and the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) which you will be very near. The bars and clubs I went to were all either gay bars or gay-friendly, so I'm not sure how appropriate they would be for you or your mother... Are you looking for advice on food places? Piazza della Repubblica has some good ones, though they are a little pricey. Oh! And there is an Irish Pub near Piazza Repubblica on Via Pellicceria. They have some very creative names for their drinks and they speak english. Try their version of a White Russian, if you get a chance!
