I had this strange thought this morning. . . Ok, when you are annointed with holy oil, where do they put it? On the center of your forhead where your third eye chakra is. Now... do we think that the xians/catholics are trying to cloud the third eye or do we think that in its original form that this ritual was for opening or clearing that chakra?

I'd vote for the opening & clearing. I think the intent would've been far more pure in its original form---as I believe the rituals of most religions would've been.

and it would make sense as an opening and clearing technique... but here is what led me to actually wonder... When the original rituals came into being, was xianity to release people or control people.. I suppose that the answer will remain subjective dependant upon where one falls on the bigger picture.

Your absolutely right---this question could be bantered about ad nauseum. This is such an over-simplification to say, but I personally believe that rituals at their core base (and I believe this to be the case with most religions...) had the purest of intents and were meant to help with our psycho-spiritual evolution. I don't think it was until certain sects of mankind devolved to the point where they felt it necessary to control the masses that the rituals were bastardized or simply eradicated.
