Whole New Meaning...

Twice today I have seen something that gives new meaning to driving and talking on a cellphone...

I saw two separate kids in the neighborhood today riding their bikes while talking on a cellphone. What is this world coming to?

Hey, I am probably not going to be able to go. I have barely made a dent in all of the research papers I have due next weekend and I still have to go by school to get everything ready for this week. If you go, tell Byron I said hello!
Did you get the email about tomorrow? I sent Karie an email so that we can let our friend know about the crazy schedule. Library in the morning, lunch at 10:25, then assembly at 12:30. It will be a crazy day!
See you tomorrow!

Just remember....it's not the kids' fault. It's what they see and hear from TV and their parents. I have so many people tell me they are great parents and it is not their fault. How can you make a parent understand that it has nothing to do with how "good" of a parent they are but all the "routine" things they do on a daily basis?
So, how do you stop that kind of activity? If you see a child riding their bike and talking on the cellphone, what do you do? Pull them over and write a ticket?? Ask them if their mother knows that they are talking and biking at the same time. There is no easy answer. We are doomed. I can see the headlines now, "Child struck while riding their bike and talking on a cell phone by a driver who was talking on a cell phone. Local police are still investigating but the consensus is that the phones will be taken into custody and charged with over use at the wrong time."
Too funny!!

Cant you just see that headline in the near future!
That is actually what irritated me about the second kid I saw because she pulled out right in front of me peddling her bike and talking and gave me the dirtiest look! All I could think was "geez kid, you are 12 and you already have road rage".
What is sad, which is what Penny mentioned in the first comment, is how many young children have cellphones in the first place. I know in my 2nd grade classroom of at least 3 kids who have cellphones.
School nurse question for you--what is the best way to protect my classroom from the chicken pox? The classroom next to mine had a student go home this week with them. Will lysol work?

Chickenpox is airborne so using Lysol will not work. The only way to protect everyone is hope that every child has their vaccination for varicella. That way, the disease is milder and will be over quickly (2 days verses 2 weeks). Coughing/sneezing is the biggest way the disease is spread. If you notice someone coughing, have their temp checked. If they are running a fever, then you have isolated them by sending them home. Obviously, you can't wear masks in a classroom (even though it would solve the spreading of flu and colds) but you can encourage each child to cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze.
Basically, you just have to cover all the bases you can. I would implement the taking a temp with anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Utilize your school nurse. Keep a big bottle of hand sanitizer in class and encourage (enforce:) that each child wash their hands after they sneeze/cough.
You won't stop the spread of flu, colds and chickenpox, but you will slow it down considerably. Good luck.

This year has been rough with the spreading of germs. We had a nasty cold bug go through the room a few weeks ago. Lately it has been the stomach bug and now the threat of chickenpox.
Thanks for the advice!
