pouring concrete

While I am not opposed to construction of new housing, there is just a part of me that is very sad and unhappy that they are tearing up the little strip of land in front of my parking lot to build and street and "luxury" homes. The field across the parking lot is next. Given the fact that the front and back yards of these homes will be a parking ( Read more... )

Nearly 2,000 homes where I lived in Reading, Pennsylvania have been built over the past 15 years or so, out of cornfield. This includes a new luxury apartments community, we're talking buildings upon buildings with its own rec center, completely fenced in community... I might as well have grown up in Burbank, California. But it was all corn field! I remember when it was all cornfield and my house was one of five on the block!!!! Then the townhouses came, the entire development... Somebody's making a ton of money, but you know what's trippy? I remember sledding off of/down a HUGE mud pile which is literally right where my father's house is now. So basically I sledded there (it was the other side of the block and across the street) years before it was my second house. Sigh... development. Change.

It is ironic how our civilization survives on such structures. We must tear up the land in order to thrive, and yet are we depriving ourselves of something? Of course, I'm not one to talk as the last place you'd find me sleeping would be outside! I think it's the "aquarius" in me that tugs at my conscience. Of course, when tearing up land near a dwelling and putting down concrete, flooding is also a concern that isn't far from my mind.
