Vidding Question Which Makes Me Seem Dumb

Apr 24, 2009 12:07

What is everyone's process on vidding with source ripped from DVDs? More specifically, once you have the VOB files sitting there, what next?

Obviously I have my own methods, but this is for Vividcon so I don't want to mess around with possible fail. (I've heard that once it's on the projector you can really tell and this makes me go MEEP!) So I'm ( Read more... )

When I clip from DVDs, I also take the VOB files into Vdub and encode them to AVI using the HuffyUv compression codec. I believe chasa gave me that tip years ago and it works best for me. I'm surprised that you need advise here, since your vids are always so spectacular. :)

Yeah I know, I was really ashamed of even making this post, lol. Truth is it's been a while since I used DVD footage and I always compressed it with the WM9 codec to keep the clip size down. But since this is for screening purposes (which I will attend lol) I wanted to work with HQ source.

Can I ask if I should be seeing the Huffyuv codec in the Compression window (cuz mine looks like this and it's not in there even after I installed it), or is it like in there and I don't know about. Like should I just go File → Save as AVI?

Yep, you should see it like this: http://www.neuralcluster.net/images/vdubhuffy.png

And you say youinstalled it? Maybe try re-installation or reboot.

I think it was an issue with Vista not wanting to install it the normal way. I used a thing Chasa suggested and now I see Huffy in the Compression window in VDub! \o/

(I feel like such a n00b all of a sudden lol!)

Sorry to bug. Was wondering if you do any special settings with Huffyuv?

Oh my! 0_o I can't thank you enough for taking the time to write all that up! Honestly, I really appreciate the effort. :)

I'll take note of your ripping software. I use DVDShrink but I'm always opened to new tech. And as far as the jerking in the preview window goes, hell I still get it and I have a current model puter. Pre-render is the shiz. Altho I noticed that you don't really get the ghost frames picked out until you do a test render.

So you edit with the VOB files too. Do you use XP? I think it's the fact that I'm on Vista that was giving me troubles. The files were acting very wonko once on the timeline.

Your comment made loads of sense and I super really appreciate it! :D

I probably should mention how Flagpole Sitta always brings a smile to my face. :) Love that vid!

FCP is quite scary as it is THE SHIZ. So I don't blame you for wanting Vegas. I use FCP at work but vid on Vegas at home. It's very bizarre.

Thanks again for your input! :D
