All teenage boys know that they’re better than everyone else. Shinichi Kudo has the case history to prove it. Although only a second year student in high school, Shinichi has solved mysteries that have baffled Tokyo’s police, gaining national and international fame as ‘the Heisei Holmes’ in the process. Solving bizarre and gruesome murders is not his only talent - Shinichi’s an accurate shot with a soccer ball, taught himself to play the violin in imitation of his hero, Holmes, and possesses an encyclopaedia-like knowledge of just about anything that could possibly pertain to a crime. He’s a natural actor, has a sharp sense of smell and perfect pitch (but cannot sing to save his life).
Like most teenage boys, Shinichi strives hard to present a cool persona in public, reacting to anything that isn’t mystery related with indifference, scepticism or ridicule. However, although he acts as though he doesn’t care, Shinichi will rarely turn down a request for help - especially when a mystery follows. He has priorities - morbid as they are - but there’s one thing guaranteed to shake them; Shinichi’s childhood friend, classmate, and best friend Ran, around whom his persona of indifference becomes increasingly more difficult to maintain. Although Shinichi ended up spending their first ‘date’ talking about how awesome Sherlock Holmes is and solving a bloody murder, and later bottled out of confessing his feelings in order to solve a second crime, no matter how confusing or desperate the situation, Ran being upset or in periled invariably gets Shinichi’s attention. Having confessed his feelings for her in between pursuing a mass murderer in London, Shinichi is waiting Ran’s response with a disinterest that fools nobody - except Ran.
Of course, there’s a few things that Ran doesn’t know, chief among which is the fact that the overly curious and precocious elementary school kid that has been left in her care is none other than her mysteriously absent best friend. While on an outing to a theme park together, the ‘date’ mentioned above, Shinichi witnessed a shady deal being cut by two men in black, members of a deadly organisation, as discovered when then poisoned Shinichi to keep him from revealing their existence. The experiemental apotoxin, however, shrunk Shinichi instead of killing him, and knowing that he - and everyone around him - are as good as dead should the Organisation ever discover he’s alive, Shinichi adopted the name and persona of Conan Edogawa, preternaturally mature and polite elementary school student.
Conan’s knack of spotting useful clues in cases has endeared him to the Tokyo Police force, and irritated Kogorou Mouri, Ran’s father, and the private investigator that Conan is currently living with. Using Mouri as his crime solving puppet, Conan accompanies him on cases, tries to bring the necessary evidence to his attention, and when this fails, tranquilises him and solves the case through appropriating Mouri’s voice by means of Conan’s ‘voice-changing bowtie’, one of many gadgets gifted to Conan by his inventor friend Professor Agasa. In fact, since Conan moved in and ‘Sleeping Kogorou’ gained fame, the amount of murders they’ve encountered has increased to the extent that police officers have wondered if Mouri, and later Conan himself, isn’t some kind of death god. As Conan, Shinichi presents a cute, childish front to the world. The vulnerability of his smaller, weaker body and the fact that living in close quarters with Ran makes it harder to ignore her sadness and concern over Shinichi’s disappearance, means that as Conan, Shinichi’s gained a greater awareness of the impact his actions have on others and a sense of humility - although this is quickly forgotten on the occasions that he does return to his 17 year old body. In private or with people who know Conan’s secret, the childish persona is prone to slip and the opinionated teenager or the analytical detective is prone to emerge. After all, as Shinichi is fond of pointing out, there is only one truth - so naturally someone’s got to point it out!
