Is it Seventeen Steps by Katie Forsythe? Those are on liquidsky, but you can get the link just by googling her name.

Oh no D: it was an ebook and not free because I remember that I could not read it because I did not have a paypal at the time.

(I love Katie's stories, by the way, they are great <3)

I suppose you've tried Holmesfinders here on LJ? They are not Emily Veinglory's stories are they? I know she was talking about publishing them at one point and took them down off the net.

Just because no one's mentioned it... was it My Dearest Holmes by Rohase Piercy? It is available on Amazon as an ebook, is a pastiche and is absolutely wonderful.
