A little earlier, I think. Towards the end of, or immediately after the initiative plot, because mom is still around.

But I could be wrong... I will get a clearer answer when I get to it in my Buffy watching (Yay Netflix!)

It's season 5, Fool For Love..which I totally never saw until last night and OMG BEST EPISODE EVER! Or..okay, not ever..but...REALLY GOOD EPISODE! AHHH!
And heee, yes. Spike is just...yes. Yes. ^^

yeah, Fool For Love is a great episode. it's when spike's thing for buffy first starts.
seaons 5 for me is hit or miss. i hate glory and dawn is annoying. but there are some real gems of episodes in there.

awwww!! oh man, I can totally see why now!! Because this episode makes me understand!! I get it now!! And OMG dancing is all they've ever done! YAAHHH!! That scene gave me freakin goosebumps.
