Dear fellow laptop users,

if your lappie keeps crashing on several occasions such as opening too many programs/windows/applications at once, does that mean it's time to get a new one?

By the way, the battery cannot sustain itself for very long within less than an hour. Or getting another battery will probably prevent the sudden shutdown again?

Could you please tell us what brand and model of laptop you have? How much disk space and RAM you have? This could determine what kind of advice you get.

Off the top of my head I'd say that it's likely you don't have enough RAM.

It's the acer extensa 4620Z (pretty old model I think)... actually the majority space is taken up by those you-know-whats

How much RAM??

I would say a couple of things:

1) If the computer is too old, just get a new one. Don't faff around with trying to get this one to work faster or better if it is more than 3 years old unless you absolutely cannot afford a new one.

2) If you have to make this one work, first get a new battery and follow manufacturer's instructions on charging and maintaining it. Second, get as much RAM as you can for it (usually 2-4 GB). Third, make sure you have a backup of the hard disk, take off as much of the you-know-whats onto an external drive as you can, and defragment the hard disk. Fourth, if you do not have much room left on your hard disk, buy a new one and install it in the laptop.

I realise that this advice means some work on your part. But, the alternative could be losing your data and having to buy a new laptop anyway. Good luck!
