Writing's on the Wall is a crappy lead track. It's not a good song, especially compared to other songs put out by this band. I mean, every other Tea Party album has a great lead track, that draws you into the album. I mean, The River, Fire in the Head, Temptation, Chimera, Walking Wounded, and Interzone are all great songs. This song actually made me want to stop the cd, and not venture any further. It's got a very mainstream rock sound, something I wasn't expecting from this band ever. Jeff Martin's voice, is about the only thing stopping this band from being any mainstream rock band of your choosing here. For the first three tracks, I'm sitting her wondering what's going on, and if maybe one of my all-time favourite gbands has been replaced by evil cyborgs from another dimension, sent here to poison the world with mediocre music.
Oceans is the first slow song. It's fairly mediocre as well. At this point it sinks in, and I'm all "what the fuck happened to all the really cool Middle-Eastern instruments that are usually present? This is just....guitar. I'm diasappointed." This doesn't sound weird enough for me.
Halfway through, Luxuria comes along. This song sounds like it'd be right at home on the Transmission record. So, things are looking up? Towards the end of the song, it gets a little repetitive. I changed my mind. This is like, watered-down Transmission. Sigh.
Two more songs that are boring, and sound kind of like Godsmack. *disappointed face*
The Watcher. I like this song. It's slow, and pretty. And it sounds like the Tea Party is supposed to. So far, the best track on the album.
Empty Glass. They keep mentioning "Major Tom", and all I can do is sing "Ground control to Major Tom" in the back of my mind. Yes, my friends, you guessed it....this song isn't that great either.
Okay, hands down, Wishing You Would Stay is the greatest song on the cd. For the first minute, I wasn't sure...but then, Holy McNarland's vocal line came in, and well, I was hooked. This song has a great vocal blend, and I love it. If only....maybe if Holly sang on all the songs on the album, it would improve it? Doubtful. I think I could only take SO much of the boring sound this album has.
Alright. Seven Circles. The LAST song. I like it too. The soft/loud thing it has going works for me. It also reminds me of "Leaning on Love" Jeff Martin's solo song for some kind of charity thing. It almost sounds like two different songs though. At three minutes, it sounds like it's over...and then continues, with a similar lyrics theme, but it's different musically. That's weird. And kind of cool.
To recap, there are 3 songs I like, one song I thought I liked, but then realized I didn't. That leaves 7 songs that I don't like at all. Kam was right on this one, much to my disappointment.
I'm going to listen to the Interzone Mantras now, and pretend like this cd never happened.
