hmmm that's strange. i kinda feel that the uK has the upper hand right now. just in terms of everything. you guys are MUCH smarter.

this is because america is very BIG and there are areas that have been hard to reach in the past (such as areas of tenessee) and hard to make reform/change happen. that area was one of the last to get electricity due to it's disconnectedness from the rest of the states and it was one of the last to have integrated schools, etc.

because you guys have such a small country, it's very easy i think to keep the entire place up to date, and because there's more person-to-person interaction i think it makes it easier for people to want to be as up-to-date on knowledge as everyone else. kind of like nyc.

i kind of think that the UK and europe esp is gonna start gaining the upper hand soon.

it must also be SO COOl to live there. you're surrounded by all the culture from the other countries. i think america tends to ignore other cultures too much and be too elitist. :(

the UK is a lot more up to date, i think (as Alistair Darling put it, our politicians "don't do God"), but we're pretty unpopular with the EU for our continued support of america. just look at the eurovision song contest! nul points every time.

the eurovision is a good way to explain it, really. even though we never get any points, we never get kicked off the program because we're too powerful.

it is nice to be near europe but it also highlights how different we are to them. english people have a horrible reputation over there as tourists (mainly alcohol and football hooliganism).

(i forgot to add:) it's hard to brits to comprehend america, really. apart from tiny minorities, religion and politics are totally separate and Tony Blair could only become a Catholic after he stopped being prime minister. i think to quite a lot of people the idea of america's power is a little like forrest gump running the world. except forrest would probably do nicer things.
