[Background] Maeabara Keiichi is the son of a famous artist. He was a top notch student with really good grades after being put into a different class. They found out through a test that he is really intelligent, but because he fails to get interested with most questions it caused him to not do so well. After excelling in school though, other kids started to inadvertently bully him with pranks such as writings on his desk, dead animals and soon became wary of school. Keiichi then was the perpetrator of a series of crimes involving shooting children with a toy gun. At first they couldn't figure out who was doing it, but after doing it for a long period of time Keiichi finally confessed to his crime and was put on probation for a short while. Who did it was never announced to the public, however because of this his father decided they needed a change and thus they moved to Hinamizawa.
He made friends with Ryuuguu Rena, Furude Rika, Sonozaki Mion, Houjou Satoko and later on Sonozaki Shion.
Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro. He learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro. It is during this time when the anime is divided into arcs, each with a different ending in which he or one of his friends becomes paranoid, and a crime or murdered is committed. In every arc, Takano (the nurse at the clinic) and Tomitake (freelance photographer) are the victims of the recent curse. Takano is found burned to death in the mountains and Tomitake dead having clawed at his throat until dead.
In the first arc (Onikakushi-hen) Keiichi becomes overcome with paranoia as his friends kept hiding things from him. They wouldn't tell him anything about the bizare deaths in Hinamizawa as well as what happened to Satoshi, Satoko's older brother. This led to a bad ending where he ended up killing Rena and Mion because he was afriad they were going to kill him first. In the end he ended up scratching his neck and eventually bled to death after running away from the scene of the crime with his last words being "I'm sorry".
The next arc (Tatarigoroshi-hen) revolves around Satoko as she is abused by her uncle that returned to Hinamizawa. It is revealed that this has happened before as well. Keiichi kills her uncle believing that to be the only way to save Satoko. It has yet another bad ending as Satoko finds out that Keiichi killed her uncle. Rika is found dead and Satoko believes that Keiichi did it and pushed him off a bridge into the water.
Then we have the next arc (Watanagashi-hen) where it is revealed that Mion has a twin sister named Shion as well as the crush Mion has on Keiichi. This is yet another bad ending with Mion being indirectly rejected by Keiichi as he gives a doll he won to Rena as he saw it to 'girly' for someone like Mion. This causes Shion to remember Satoshi, Satoko's older brother, and eventually kills Rika, and Satoko believing them to be the reason for Satoshi's disappearance. As this is happening Shion is disguised as Mion so everyone thinks it's Mion doing all this. She kills Mion after traumatizing her as she witnessed the tortuous death of Satoko. She tries to kill Keiichi by stabbing him but he lived and she died by falling off a building. There is an arc (Meakashi-hen) where it is the same as Watanagashi-hen only is through Shion's perspective. It shows why she did it, what she thinks happened to Satoshi and how life was for Satoshi and Satoko as they were rejected by Hinamizawa. Other then that, it is the same as Watanagashi-hen.
We then have the other arc (Tsumiboroshi-hen) where it revolves around Rena's life before she moved to Hinamizawa and her family. She finds that her dad is dating a girl who is only dating him for his money. Rena finds this out and kills her as well as her associate which happens to be Satoko's uncle. Her friends find her hiding one of the bodies and they all make a promise to help her out. She then finds out about the Hinamizawa syndrome and shares this information with Keiichi. Rena then is led to believe Mion betrayed her and that the parasites in the Hinamizawa syndrome are actually aliens. Keiichi remembers his experience in Onikakushi-hen and realizes what Rena is going through and is determined to help her. She takes the school hostage, and fights Keiichi who looses but Rena stops as she realizes what she was doing.
Finally we have the arc in which this Keiichi is from (Minagoroshi-hen). In this, all the previous problems/triggers that cause Keiichi, Rena, and Shion to go berserk are solved as they remember small pieces of what happened in the other arcs. They avoid the tragedies and try for a better future this time. They found a way to save Satoko from her uncle without resorting to murder, Keiichi doesn't doubt his friends, Rena confronts her dad rather then killing his girlfriend, and Keiichi gives the doll to Mion instead of Rena. After the festival Rika reveals to everyone finally what is going on involving the Hinamizawa syndrome and the threat on her life. They decide to stay with Rika to help prevent her dying but eventually go on their way as the police guard her. It is also made known the true villain behind the Hinamizawa was Takano. Keiichi and the others go back to help Rika after having a bad feeling and help her escape from the people who are trying to capture her. In the attempt to get a vehicle to help, Keiichi is shot by Takano.
In Minagoroshi-hen, Keiichi does vaguely remember killing Satoko's uncle, as well as a bad experience with something Rena made for Keiichi that had a needle inside placed by Mion. This was back in Onikakushi-hen, where it was meant to be a 'joke' but only helped grow Keiichi's paranoia that they were seriously trying to kill him.
Unknown to Keiichi and his friends, this seemingly loop-in-time is caused by Furude Rika. She does it because in every world she is killed, and one of her friends goes berserk. She is able to do this with the help of Hanyuu a.k.a Oyashiro, the God of Hinamizawa
[Personality] Keiichi's charisma and remarkable talent for speech making, earned him the nickname 'Magician of Words' among his friends. He has a strong belief that any fate can be broken because it is something you make and decide for yourself. Keiichi also has as unshakable will to believe in his friends, that they'll always be there for him and that he will always be there for them as well. This strong faith in those around him allows him to easliy make new friends. He is the type of person that wants to be heard, and if someone is in pain or being hurt, he will want to do anything he can to help. Unable to do something is what he hates the most.
Keiichi is really good at listening when someone needs it and can be pretty good at giving advice as well. Whether or not you tell him whats wrong/bothering you is another story. He is not the type to push on a subject that someone doesn't want to talk about or share unless absolutley necessary. Everyone has secrets they don't want others to know about and he respects this. With all this though, Keiichi is goofy and is a big pervert with a belief that all men are perverts to the very core. He is not ashamed to admit it either.
[Specialties/Abilities] Is good with a baseball bat? He doesn't have any real abilities but he his pretty intelligent as already stated. He is really good at convincing/persuading people to see his point and getting support from those around him.
[Affection] Feel free to flirt, he'll flirt/tease right back. Though you'll freak him out a bit if you kiss him unless you're someone he really likes *coughRenacough* in which he'll blush xD
[Fighting] You can attack him but be warned he will fight back. Normally he doesn't provoke fights, but has done so in the past for good reason.
[Other Facts] Because he lives in Hinamizawa, he became "infected" with the Hinamizawa Syndrome. It is a disease that everyone from Hinamizawa has. There's different levels at which certain symptoms occur. It causes people to eventually get extremely paranoid, be delusional, and display violent/destructive behavior towards others. People go berserk and think that everyone and everything around them is out to get them, and will eventually begin to scratch at themselves (specifically around their neck) in an attempt to dig out 'maggots' until they eventually claw their own throats out. However, this is only when one is under a lot of stress, or if they leave the village, as the Queen Carrier (a.k.a Furude Rika) emits a hormone that suppresses the disease. I've pulled him from the end of Minagoroshi-hen where he is shot. He doesn't remember fully, but he does have bits and pieces of what happened to him and others in the other worlds. He knows that he is infected but does not yet clearly remember the other worlds where he went berserk.
