What's with all of the ports on the front of the computer?

The black wire is a USB cable for my webcam. By having it in front it gives me greater flexibility moving the camera around. The silver wire is firewire and it goes to an external hard drive which I use for archiving and backups.

I was talking about the panel just below the CD/DVD drive that appears to have a lot of ports.
