Kids These Days

For xmas, I gave my nephews each a bag of gold chocolate coins, with $20 in dollar coins mixed in. Kinda awesome, right?

My sister reported the following exchange when she gave them to the kids. They're 12 and 14, but live in Oklahoma, and might be a bit sheltered...

Nephews: Oh boy, chocolate coins!

It's that skeptical age, isn't it. It's sad how little acceptance there is for dollar coins.

Yeah, they last longer. When the Sacajawea dollar was introduced it was intended to replace $1 bills, but the Crane Co. and other people involved with printing paper money launched a campaign to keep them, so for a while we had coins and bills. The coin program was just cut a week ago to curb unnecessary government spending. :(

(and because we had both kinds of dollars everyone kept on using the paper ones. if someone gets a $1 coin they're more likely to tuck it away in a drawer with their $2 bills and wheat pennies. it makes me sad.)

At first I was really confused by this post ... probably because as a Canadian I am way more used to dollar coins than to bills. x)

one of the first impressions of the US when I first got back from Japan was how gross it was to get a bunch of filthy $1 bills as change. :P
