Character
Name: Karkat Vantas
Series: Homestuck
Timeline: After conversing with John on LOHAC ( right after John arrives there and before Karkat's first trolling )
Canon Resource Links: BAM

Personality:

At first glance, Karkat is an extremely rude individual which he is for the most part. His typing reflects his nature, which is a gray font and using caps at all times. As for his syntax, it is nearly perfect. However, most of his language could be considered rather offensive. Karkat uses condescending terms rather frequently, as in, whenever he can get the opportunity to fit them in. He also tends to excessively swear, using words that he's made up as well as some that people would be familiar with. Karkat doesn't seem to be all that concerned about how he comes across when he initially talks to people, Jade's first conversation with him starting out by Karkart going 'hi again idiot.' He also ends that conversation with telling her just how stupid she is and how she's going to screw everything up for everyone. Karkat makes no pretenses about his platonic hate ( yes there is such a thing ) for humans and goes on to treat them like the inferior beings they are.

As a troll, it is in his nature to be violent. The race itself promotes violence and mental instability, as can be seen with the other troll kids in the series. However, Karkat is given the role as the Knight of Blood for a reason. Generally speaking, he is more angry and violent and angry than the others, even if he doesn't always choose to engage in physical fights. He seems to be rather proficient in his use of the sickle and one of his aspirations before the game took over his life was to become one of the threshecutioners, which is pretty respectable. Karkat is often seen smashing his keys in a fit of fury. It's also implied that he has done well for himself in the different rounds of the game and has hacked down many with his sickle.

Karkat is also very short tempered. He frequently is seen sassing at the others that he considers friends, not holding back in calling them stupid or making fun of them in any way that he can. This can be seen in how he responds to Sollux and Gamzee. Kartkat, in speaking with Gamzee asks what he did to ever deserve such an awful best friend. In Sollux's scenario he picks on his fellow troll's bipolar issues. Kartkat often belittles the others and tends to want to get the show on the road. His first reaction is to hate first and think later, as can be seen in his initial thoughts in dealing with the humans. As he believes his situation to be entirely their fault, he commands the others to troll the kids. Karkat doesn't stop to think about how he really should deal with it or how to best go about this, but instead chooses to react to it and it shows in his conversations with the human kids at first.

This is a constant problem with him, the whole reacting problem. Karkat doesn't contain himself very well and often expresses himself to the fullest, which is usually not the best way. When he fails to save Sullox in time, he has an irrational moment of nothing but crying and is simply besides himself with emotion. Even in his memos he expresses some of his overwhelming emotions and thoughts on what is going on in whatever time frame he is currently in. Some of his act first think later problems come back to haunt him. If he had really taken the time to think about what had been going on, he might have realized that trolling the kids had not been the answer, but by helping them through this, then perhaps both of their realities might have been spared. However, he is not this type of troll. Instead he lingers on the fact that he has seen the human kid's future that is linked with their own and has decided that it's all a failure. The humans have failed and their failure has resulted in the troll's session being interrupted and also failing. Part of his problem is that he carries a bit of a grudge about that throughout the series. The fact that he thinks to troll John backwards instead of linearly also shows that he doesn't always stop to think about if that is the best course of action or not.

However that doesn't mean Karkat is entirely stupid. Yes, he does have issue with keeping himself in line, but he does come back and see it later. Karkat often expresses how much he hates his past self, even when he had just finished being his past self. This goes to show that yes, he does see things in retrospect and he does which that he could show a little restraint. Of course some of that simply goes out the window the moment he starts to argue with himself in any of the memos and, of course, with the private memo between past Karkat and Jade. Karkat does, every now and then, offer apologies and does act more polite and decent with Jade in later logs and conversations. There are times where he is embarrassed with what he just finished saying and asks that it be entirely forgotten or just dropped. He has the capacity to acknowledge where he is wrong and feel slightly bad for it. There is a little bit of evidence where he tries to make amends by actually talking to Jade and all the emotions that she is experiencing.

This is actually something that Karkat does often and doesn't take lightly. He seems to be the one that people go to with their problems. Some of the trolls go to him with their relationship issues and he is seen encouraging them to talk to him on a more private line. Karkat doesn't brush off these issues, especially not where feelings are concerned. He is really an expert on how troll relationships work. True, he is a fan of romcoms and movies ( which he should be embarrassed of and oddly isn't ) and thus he is all over the topic, but he does care about these sorts of issues as far as his so-called friends are concerned. Karkat is seen talking to Eridan about the pale to red feelings that he has for Fef. Of course Eridan is very extreme and outright not smart about these things, but Karkat demonstrates some level of patience when talking to him. The truth is, Karkat really does care for the other trolls, even if he doesn't exactly display that all the time. He is a bit over protective at times, yelling at Terezi for flirting with Dave and then right back to yelling at John for even speaking to Vriska, let alone the flirting that happens there.

Speaking of odd personality quirks, Karkat does not wear his blood on his sleeve. While the other trolls seem to make a big deal about the color of their blood, Karkat does not. In fact, he purposefully types in gray and wears gray to remain anonymous. However, that is largely in part due to his blood being red. He seems to be disgusted by the color, going on and on about how disgusting it is and that no one should look. When he's stabbed, he shows more concern over Jack seeing the color rather than the fact that he had been stabbed at all. When dealing with Terezi finding out, he claims that it's impossible for her to know the color. He had taken very good care to clean the wound and ensure the fact that she wouldn't smell his blood color. In the end he asks that Terezi keep it secret from the others and informs her that he will tell them when he is ready to... He is simply afraid that they don't see him as a leader.

Which says another thing about Karkat. He really is a little bundle of conflicting emotions. For as much platonic hate he carries for people, or as much as he claims to, he isn't really all that secure. In his dealings with Terezi and their matespritship, he shows that he is a little nervous with it, hesitantly typing a little heart only after their conversation has ceased. Karkat gets a little flustered when she mentions that he is cute and doesn't seem to care all that much about his blood color. This is probably what aids in those red feelings that he has for her as well as some of the protective/hostile nature against Dave.

Karkat as a leader is really two fold. He actually isn't entirely the leader of the group. Karkat is quite gullible, having been tricked into going into the game first by Terezi. He isn't the brains of the operation, but seems to be the staple of the group. Sure, he makes memos that the other trolls respond to but don't really listen to. That's a lot of how Karkat is seen. There are times where he is ignored and then there are times where he is the first one that is sought out. He does, however, understand the strengths of the other trolls and has used that to their advantage. Karkat does feel immensely responsible for the lot of them, blaming himself in varying degrees for the things that they have went through. He has also thrown up the memos in order to keep things straight as well as a warning to those who might see them in the past.

The other portion to Karkat as a leader is that he is power hungry. He is a proud little troll with ambition. He is haughty and arrogant, despite his place in the caste system and believes that he is meant to be somebody. Karkat constantly mentions that being a leader is in his blood and jumps at every opportunity to do things fitting of his role. There have been speeches made and he barks out orders for the other trolls to follow, despite if they actually follow them or not. He doesn't take too well to others doing things that he explicitly states not to do and gets nearly violently upset when ignored. Karkat tends to act immaturely in response to anyone that dare questions his leadership for the band of trolls.

Ironically enough, Karkat also passes out at the sight of blood, or at least someone getting their legs hacked off.

What it all comes down to is this: Karkat acts the way that he does mostly as a cover. He is the troll out of the twelve of them that has true feelings that don't stem from violence. He cares on a level that most trolls would probably laugh at. Everyone is important to him, despite what he says. Karkat practically lives by the code that everyone is a person with feelings and that's why they should be respected. He tells Eridan that Nepeta is a person, even though Karkat tiptoes around her flush crush for him. When Kanaya dies, he attempts to revive her. When Terezi starts to cry due to Dave, Karkat goes to see what is wrong. Even though Gamzee had murdered two trolls, Karkat still doesn't want to let him go. He calms him instead of simply just killing him. Vriska expresses doubts that Karkat even has it in him to kill.

It doesn't help matters that Karkat is absolutely disgusted with himself. In fact, Karkat hates himself more than he could ever hate anyone else. His blood color doesn't exist on the hemospectrum, and thus his life has been almost a constant preparation for being culled at any moment. This troll has been sheltered out of a need to live and that has turned Karkat into this troll with a hard exterior. He has to. One moment of weakness and his life could be forfeit. Since he is so entirely self loathing, he has a hard time really trusting others with his own affairs. Karkat is not private just because he wants to be. It's because he doesn't know any other way to be. He's so down on himself that the opinions of others are extremely important to him. That's why he couldn't even confess his blood color. That is why he is power driven. Karkat wants to prove that he is not a failure. He is not, despite his blood color, filth.

All in all, Karkat is a sensitive person with a hard outer shell. A shell with spikes.

Strengths
+ He is the troll whisperer, basically. Karkat is actually pretty good at keeping the trolls motivated towards a common goal
+ Once he's calmed down, he can work with others in a team setting ( not all trolls can do this )
+ Cares about everyone on his team to a certain degree ( not something trolls normally do )
+ As of canon update, can accept his faults in the mess and attempt to move passed them
+ Capable of the legendary pap shoosh
+ Therapist for the emotional and romantic woes of his teammates ( he will sit down and talk them through this stuff )

Weaknesses:
- Temper is very short and he's overly emotional to go with it
- Overly aggressive to make up for his inner squishy feelings. He's abrasiveness, yelling, and demanding
- Not actually able to kill someone, but willing to order someone else to do it
- Fears his own blood color
- Tons of self loathing a depreciation here
- Jade on Jade imagery
- Sucks at his own quadrant life

Third Person Sample:

There were simply some things about this whole universe that Karkat found particularly loathesome after only two days of being transported here. Sure, it wasn't necessarily the fact that he was somehow human and feeling very vulnerable ( though there had been much screaming and yelling to the sky about who ever was fucking with him to just stop and put things back to where they should be ). All right, so that had been one thing that Karkat wasn't particularly coping with very well. It would seem that humans, in general, were just downright weaker. More fragile. He wasn't able to take a hit to the head properly like he should have and things hurt way more than they fucking should. Karkat found that he also needed more sleep, or tired easier. Coming from a kid that spent over six hundred hours awake and then only sleeping roughly about one and still kept going, this was a huge adjustment. It fucking sucked for a multitude of reasons and Karkat could spend days just documenting all the ways that being a troll was infinitely better than being a human. Forget the fact that they didn't have horns or claws or even eyes that could see in the dark. Everything about them was so messed up.

Then there was the world itself. Karkat spent the last hour trying to figure out how to open the goddamn red and white ball that was supplied to him. It seemed so easy when the demonstration of how to catch these shitty monsters was given to him. He had chewed on the sucker. Bashed it against any hard surface he could find. First it was the ground. Then it was the goddamn rock and finally a tree. Karkat finally got so pissed at the thing that he just threw it at the wood, only to have it bounce off and hit him in the face. Well forget that shit. He was seething and just set it down to glare at it moodily. Yes, he brooded over the stupid ball for a good half hour before desciding this was one fo the stupidest things he had ever done. With a growl that was barely even one a proper troll should be giving, he picked it up. That was when it decided to work and Karkat was just standing there, Karkat blinking at what would be his partner in these endeavors.

At least it didn't look absolutely ridiculous.

From that point on, Karkat decided that the only way to get out of this shit hole was to play this thing. If it was true, what some people were saying over the network that was more complicated to figure out than it should have been, then Karkat had the brightest idea. He would play the game, beat all of the fucking things, and then perhaps the way back would be presented to him. By now he figured that the Critical Moment had not happened yet, that he had not slept through it. That meant he needed to find a way back to the Veil and hopefully complete the plans that the rest of them had been spending precious moments on. This was the only thing that Karkat was focusing on and in order to get back, if that meant completing this stupid, grubtarded game, then he would do it. He would win in a glorious manner and catch all of these shitty monsters and be the victor. Yes, it would be him. First, though...

Karkat needed to stop getting lost in the tall fucking grass.

"Fuck!"
