What is linguistics?

I will now ask a legitimate question: What got you interested in linguistics?

Well, actually, I wasn't sure what linguistics was when I originally went into it. I just knew it had to do with languages, and I personally had thought it had to with etymology. So what really got me into linguistics was my first set of classes.
