Remus knocked as softly as he could on the door to Severus' lab, a bowl of soup balanced carefully in one hand. When there was no answer, he tried again, just barely louder this time. "Severus? I've got lunch," he called softly.

A few seconds later, the door swung open and Severus was standing there, glowering. "What do you want."

"Brought you lunch," he murmured, offering the soup. "You've been in there since nearly dawn."

Severus was not about to tell Remus that he was having trouble sleeping, especially since he came in so late last night. "Fine." He reached for the bowl.

"Here, it's hot, careful--" Remus handed the bowl to him carefully. "Enjoy. Will I be seeing you for dinner tonight, or are you working on something tricky?"

"Would you rather be worth everything to one person or something to many?" Though he asked, Severus knew the answer.

"No," he said hollowly, "If that was what I'd wanted, I'd have just stayed with them in the first place, or gone off with them after the train. I... I don't want to choose, but I know I have to, so. I choose you, if you'll have me."

Remus stiffened for a second, then relaxed, whining low in his throat at the familiar feel of Severus' teeth. "Shouldn't," he managed.

Shouldn'ts were things left to other men that weren't Severus Snape. He shouldn't have taken the Dark Mark when he was 17, shouldn't have followed his friends into the the Dark Arts, but he did. His entire life was full of things that he shouldn't have done and this was just another thing. His teeth pressed deeper, hands clawlike on Remus' hips.
