That's awful, hon. I don't see how smoking can hurt when you're outside in the air. People get ridiculous about that, IMO. Heck, the regular air pollution is probably far worse than cigarette smoke.
Non-smoker here. And while I agree it should be banned in enclosed, public areas I will never think that someone shouldn't be able to enjoy their cigarettes outside and in peace. *hugs*
Maybe it is unhealthy but so are a million other things well do every day from cellphones to additives, alcohol and stress. I bet that guy's not 'perfect' and I expect the fumes from cars will be a lot more polluting around a park than cigarettes.
Plus, I know we're not allowed to say this anymore, but some people, some guys we all know, make it look achingly sexy. Both my parents smoked like chimneys and look how sane I turned out (hahahaha).
try living in San Francisco. not allowed in parks, public squares, within 20 feet of a bus stop (which is every other corner), any multi-unit dwelling, besides the usual places. I've lived here for over 20 years, work at a hospital that talks about no longer hiring anyone who smokes. In all that same time I have lived in an old Victorian converted to 3 apartments, and, of course, have to go outside to smoke, but with every new tenant there is sooner or later a complaint that I have to defend against. The newer hot politicians talk about making the entire city "smoke-free", meaning not allowing smokers to rent apartments in the city. Sex offenders and hard drug addict are welcome to live and work (or not work) here, but smokers are an instant target for any spite or hate the locals feel like spewing.
I'm an ex-smoker, and I totally agree with your rant. That guy is just obnoxious! And I hate the way some people use children to provide them with a pretext for being intolerant and hateful.
