THIS. SO. HARD.

I really do understand that things happen, but I have so many stories that I love that have been on indefinite hiatus. Some for years. I keep hoping that they'll get updated one day, and some do. Most don't though. I always appreciate it when authors update their profiles to tell people what's going on. It sucks to get invested in something, then have it land in the graveyard of unfinished stories without warning or reason. lol

I'm kind of relieved I'm not the only one who has been thinking this. I know that authors probably get sick of readers commenting "UPDATE!!!" - maybe they just tune it all out and it has the opposite effect intended?

If it were one story, perhaps I'd have more patience, but an entire list? Usually when I start them they've just been updated, and the updates were frequent. Something about my reading them seems to scare authors away (okay, not really). It's like having every single station on the car radio on an indefinite commercial. RGH.

This is why I tend to avoid WIPs unless they are at least five chapters long - it means that the author has a good head of steam, and I'll get a better idea of whether or not the fic is worth the commitment. I can wait for a pretty long time o_O

Hello..! I've been off LJ for a while, RL stuff, and am trying now to slowly get back in the swing of things. Your post here resonated with me a great deal. No, it's not unreasonable. I love fanfiction, because it's a great way for me to escape, and gives me some inspiration to be creative. But yeah, all the excellent longfics I've been following seem to have suddenly stopped updating. My favorite one hasn't been updated in over two months, and I'm worried because after one long hiatus the anon-author said it was 'family issues', which is never a good sign, so I'm worried for the author. Another one dropped out, and just came back after nearly 3 months, turns out she had been in the hospital the whole time, and is still going. It makes you wonder if something terrible happened to the authors, and it's a source of anxiety. So I heartily support the idea of at least a single note of "sorry, can't update anymore. RL." I'd be sorry the fic stopped, but at least relieved that the person is okay, ya know?
