Be With You
Yokoyama Yu/Sato Megumi
They begin in the early afternoon; he picks her up from home or the Stardust building, completely unmindful of the reporters that might be lurking in either area.
Yu wears dark shades and a thick grey jacket over ripped jeans and beat-up rubber shoes. Megumi comes out wearing a dress that reminds him of clouds on a spring day. They slip into his car and drive away.
If there are any pictures in the morning, they don't know and don't care.
He takes her to places like obscure udon shops and streets lined for blocks with gashapon machines. She giggles at his fascination for the small Dragon Ball toys in plastic capsules, and he gives her the toy when he gets a Chichi or a Bulma.
She keeps the figures in her bag and drags him off for flavored crepes or ice cream, whatever suits her fancy for that day. Then she takes him to vintage clothes shops, trying things on for him, like an oversized green beanie, making him laugh, saying it clashes with her dress.
She buys him a brown felt fedora ('It looks good on you,' she'd said decisively, and he didn't have the heart to tell her no); and he buys her a pretty hair clip with a butterfly design. Megumi uses it to hold her hair up, sweeping it off from the side, and he thinks she looks adorable.
The butterfly's wings seem to flutter against her hair as she walks.
They talk about the weather (nice, rather colder this year than the last), the news (horrible, rather not watch any), being idols-- she tells him he did very well in the last episode of Yukan Club, and he asks how things are going on the set of Chiritotechin.
It's easy, and free-- they duck into a corner Chinese restaurant to satisfy Yu's need for dumplings and come out stuffed, laughing, holding on to each other's arms rather unsteadily after all that beer. They stay in the car park a little while, radio turned on low, seats pushed back, tinted windows up, and talk some more.
Megumi finds that she never finds herself without anything to talk about with Yu.
"... So I told Hina, 'It's like the conversation went nowhere!'," he's saying, waving his hands empathically in the air. "It was so embarassing. That's never happened to me before."
She laughs a little, covering her mouth with a hand. "Maybe she just doesn't like Johnny's. She was in the Arashi movie, you know? They totally ignored her. Seeing as all of you are Johnny's, too..."
He frowns, and it makes her want to ruffle his hair, like a puppy. "Still, you know? She shouldn't lump us all in the same category just because we're from the same agency."
In the end she does ruffle his hair, he looks so pityingly adorable. "I'm sure she'll warm up to you soon enough, Yu-kun. Everyone does, after a while," she murmurs confidently.
"Like you?" he asks impishly, grinning now.
"Like me," she agrees, running her hand over his hair again.
Their eyes meet and there's a pregnant pause.
He changes the subject abruptly, and she withdraws her hand.
"Do you think--"
"Are you--"
They stare at each other and grin. "You go first," he tells her.
"No, it's nothing important," she says, smiling sheepishly. "Please go on."
When she smiles like that, his heart jumps just a little.
"I was going to ask if you feel well enough to go home now," he murmurs. "We can stay here a bit more if you like, but it's getting late."
She casts a quick glance at the clock on the dashboard and blinks. "Wow, is it that late...? I didn't even realize," she says quietly, pulling the seat back up.
"Do you want me to bring you home?" he asks.
"Please."
The drive to her apartment is quiet save for the low sound of music from the radio, some ballad by Ito Yuna. At intersecions, she places her hand over his on the clutch.
He understands.
Yu walks her up to her apartment and waits until she's found her keys and turned the lock.
"Thank you again for today," she tells him, hand on the doorknob.
He shrugs, grinning slightly. "See you next week?"
"Yes, I'll mail you."
"Good night, Megumi chan."
There's another pause here, as she looks up at him expectantly, and he stares down at her, weighing his options.
Yu leaves a light kiss on her cheek and tells her he'll call before he walks to the elevators.
As he opens the door to his car his phone vibrates, and he takes it out to find mail from Megumi.
"Yu kun is the most important person for me," it says. "I really like being with Yu kun."
He drives home.
The smile on his face carries over to the next day.
