Summary: This is the last time he'll hold her like this, and she means to remember every second of it.

She lights the candles in the room, quiet, moving like a shadow from corner to corner. There are thirty or so, scattered around the place, bought on varied whims but unused up 'til now.

When she looks up after lighting the last one, she finds him leaning on the doorway, watching her. She stares back, committing each darkened feature to memory: the proud line of his neck, the curve of his shoulder, his lazy smile. She's going to miss these things.

He steps forward, closing the door behind him; she reaches for him, holds him to her-- tight, as if trying to take him into herself, and keep him there. She feels how they fit together, her head on his chest, his hands resting lightly on the small of her back. Already she feels her throat closing up, already she feels tears welling up in her eyes. They do not fall-- she has promised herself she wouldn't cry, after all. This is the last time he'll hold her like this, and she wants to cherish each second as it happens.

There're memories to be had here, she thinks as they move toward the bed, discarding clothing on the way. He pushes her robe off her shoulders, runs his fingertips lightly over her neck, cups her face. When he leans in to kiss her, he tastes tears.

He falls upon her, naked, seeking her softness amid the sheets and the pillows. When he finds her, he holds on to her-- unwilling to let go, he can't let her go just yet. He finds her scent strongest at the space where her neck meets her shoulder, and breathes her in, inhales deeply.

She moves her hands in lazy circles over his body, relishing the texture, the play of muscles under her palms. She feels his lips leaving a trail from her neck to her shoulder, his fingers running down her arms, cupping her breasts. She breathes in sharply, and feels his mouth close over hers, swallowing the sound, drinking it down. She's stopped crying, for now. Each touch is feather-light and slow as she shoves her impatience aside to savor every moment.

He pulls away to stare down at her, tracing her cheeks, her lips, before kissing her again, discarding thoughts of loneliness and replacing them with immediate heat. They take their time relearning each other, until there is nothing left to discover. Each memory is tucked away in a place deep inside her, guarded possessively, to be cherished forever.

When he finally moves into her, he does it slowly, torturously slowly. She embraces this torture, feels it prolong the seconds.

They make love gently, looking into each other's eyes. The candles continue to burn. She breathes his name when she comes, digging her fingernails into his back, closing her eyes to find shooting stars behind her eyelids. His release comes seconds later-- he bites into her shoulder, leaving a mark she'll remember him by for days after.

She's surprised to feel tears on her cheeks when she opens her eyes-- moments later she's sobbing uncontrollably in his arms.

Everything feels like goodbye, she tells him brokenly. He kisses her tears away and shakes his head.

Not goodbye, he tells her, pulling her close. Never goodbye.

One day, they will be together forever.

It is this that lulls her to sleep as the last candle burns out.
