While a proactive comment in general (and being proactive is much better than being reactive), I don't believe in doing things just so other people admire us.

The way I read it was.. to do something admirable (something good, something inspirational, anything that makes YOU feel good) and the rest will follow

Maybe more importantly -- spend time trying to accomplish something YOU admire and quit worrying whether someone else admires it or not. Set your personal standards high - and do it FOR YOU -- and the rest will follow suit.
