Summary: Adrienne doesn't know what to call her family because it's different from all of her classmates.
“Daddy? What's divorce?” Adrienne asked her father suddenly.
Kurt stopped stirring the pot of pasta sauce on the stove and turned to look at his six year old daughter. She was looking at him with wide dark eyes and Kurt turned the heat down so he could go sit at the table beside her.
“What made you think about that, Rinny?” He asked gently.
“Well, I was talking to Joey at school and I told him that I have two mommies and two daddies. He said that he did too because his mommy and daddy were divorced. Are you and mommy divorced? Because Joey said they live in different houses but we all live together!” Adrienne looked close to tears and Kurt scooped her into his arms.
“No baby, we're not divorced. When your mommies and papa get home for dinner we'll all talk about it, ok?”
Adrienne gave him a hard look-- and she looked so much like her mother that Kurt couldn't help but laugh.
“Really?”
“Of course. Now set the table, they should be here any minute.” Kurt handed her the basket of silverware and she bounced off to set the table.
It was barely five minutes before Kurt heard a car in the driveway. Seconds later he heard Adrienne shriek “Papa!” and go running out to the door. Kurt finished setting the table as Blaine made his way to the kitchen with Adrienne in his arms.
“God, I'm glad to be home. The end of the semester is so terrible. Everyone wants help with their schedules and their study guides-- I'll be home late all week because I have to extend my office hours.” Blaine groaned, leaning against his husband.
“I'm sorry love. Dinner is ready though-- we're just waiting on our beautiful half.” Kurt chuckled.
“I think I hear their car now.” Blaine looked out the window and nodded. Adrienne shimmied out of his arms and ran to greet her mothers.
“Hola mama!!” Adrienne giggled as her mother tossed her briefcase against the wall and hugged her tightly.
“Santana, do not leave your briefcase in the floor-- Brittany will trip on it and we'll end up at the hospital again.” Kurt called from the kitchen.
“Fu-forget you, Hummel.” She growled back but picked up the case nonetheless.
“Hi mommy! You look tired.” Adrienne cocked her head at her mommy and took her hand gently. Blaine was out of the kitchen in an instant and wrapped a comforting arm around Brittany and helped her to the kitchen table.
“Blaaaine, isn't it your turn to carry him yet? He's so heavy.” Brittany moaned as she slowly sat down.
“I keep telling you that it doesn't work that way sweetheart. Did Kurt help Santana carry Adrienne?” Blaine asked softly, kissing her forehead.
“No. Just tell him to stop kicking me.” She pouted.
Adrienne leaned close to her mommy's tummy and poked it. “Stop kicking our mommy Harrison. It's not nice.”
“Thank you Rinny.” Brittany smiled at her daughter and leaned down to kiss her hello.
“Dinner is ready!” Kurt brought the pasta to the table and began serving everyone. They usually took turns throughout the week but with Brittany about to pop and Blaine and Santana having very busy jobs, Kurt had been cooking almost exclusively for a month.
Once everyone was settled down and eating Kurt cleared his throat.
“Adrienne asked me a question today and I think it's important that we all four answer her honestly. Do you want to tell your mommies and papa what you asked me, Rinny?”
Adrienne mimicked her father and cleared her throat dramatically before looking around the table.
“My friend Joey told me that he has two mommies and two daddies because his mommy and daddy got a divorce. Daddy said him and mommy aren't divorced, so how did I get two mommies and daddies?”
“Well baby, you know how me and your mommies and daddy went to school together?” Blaine started slowly. Adrienne nodded. “We were all friends and we all got really busy jobs. Your daddy and I wanted to start a family and so did your mommies but it was too much for all of us.” Blaine trailed off.
“And then your daddy learned about something call 'co-parenting.' We all four work to take care of you and your brother when he's born.” Santana took over. It was really difficult to explain the concept to a six year old. Santana was a lawyer-- she could talk all day about the contracts the four of them had signed. Kurt and Blaine were Adrienne's guardians and she and Brittany will be Harrison's. Santana had carried for Kurt so that the baby could pass as his and Blaine's and Blaine had donated to them for the same reason. It had all started out so detached. Then one day they all decided to move in together and all the lines blurred and they were one big family.
“Basically baby, when you get a divorce it's because the mommy and daddy don't love each other anymore and want to meet new people. What you have is different because both of your mommies and daddies love each other very much.” Kurt finished.
Adrienne sat quietly for a long moment before smiling so widely they were sure her face would split into two. “I can't wait to tell Joey. He was acting like it was so cool to have two houses and two dogs and two families. I think it's cooler to have one big family! ...Though two dogs would be pretty cool...” She trailed off hopefully but her daddy and mommy were shaking their heads no. Oh well, she still had the coolest family ever.
