[Karai is in the library today, as she has been for several days this week. In a quiet corner, carefully looking up certain legends. Why she agreed to do a favour for her pig of a neighbour comes down more to repayment of a debt than any genuine concern for his welfare, but she supposes this is a step up from brooding and doing nothing at all

... Which of course is very bad.]
I had never heard of "dragons" before Luceti... [Granted, there are komodo dragons and the gliding lizard Draco genus, but Robert's only ever heard of the former as komodos and the latter was Latin he didn't connect the dots on.]
... But I met one, here. Or at least, that was what his friend referred to him as.

Proven by the fact he smiles a little uncertainly at that. He doesn't know how common-knowledge it is that Raphael got kidnapped, but if this person he doesn't recognize at all knows...]
... Things seem to be easier for the family now, but... I would imagine it will still take some time before everything is back to normal.
[The mental images of the rest of the family being vivisected like Raph was occasionally still haunt Robert... they aren't pleasant in the least to consider. It makes his smile falter a bit more, actually.]

As normal as it gets.
Perhaps you would pass on my condolences for me, Mr Hastings.

I have nothing to hide here; what use would circumspection be for one who has little to conceal?
[With some indignance:] I have never heard anything more from them than a name - Karai. And I would hardly be of any use anyway in such things.
[He's at least not kidding about that. Robert is so pathetic that Karai wouldn't even have to try to hurt him.]

Either they think she can be trusted not to involve the innocent or they just don't think of her as enough of a threat. One is unlikely and the other...
...is infuriating. Yet here, in this place...?
When she finally answers, her voice has turned to ice.]
You mistake my words. I offer them as a warning, nothing more.
[Abruptly, she's tired of this. She should never have bothered speaking with him in the first place. Karai closes the journal.]
