Adrian had told Higgs his plans over breakfast that morning. His friend wasn't happy - he was to be left in the house with "the old bat" and "the short thing" all day? Adrian nodded - he'd canceled classes for this trip and he wasn't going to have Higgs tag along and get them both into great trouble as he always seemed capable of doing. Adrian could hear Higgs' grumbling even as he shut the front door of the house. He got to his little Muggle auto and drove to the Cambridge train stop where he boarded a 10am train for London.

Stepping off at Kings Cross Station he felt a wave of memory hit him that, in all the stress of his Muggle dealings at the University, he hadn't allowed himself the feel. It was much like he'd felt when he'd walked through the wards at Peace Cottage, when he'd visited Daphne. He wondered for a moment if he'd run into anyone, but shaking the thought from his mind, he made his way through the city to the Leaky Cauldron and, keeping his head down just in case, walked through the pub to the back where the magical entrance to Diagon Alley waited. He took a tiny piece of cloth out of his Muggle jean's pocket and took out his wand to re-size the cloak. It had been ages since he'd warn anything properly wizard-like, but this was simple enough so that he didn't feel too uncomfortable. Throwing the cloak on over his T-Shirt, and settled himself with a deep breath. He then knocked on the bricks in a pattern he was surprised he remembered, and the door to Diagon Alley opened.

Adrian made his way quickly down the street - walking at a pace that succeeded in both getting him somewhere fast and not drawing attention to itself - and found himself standing in front of Flourish and Blotts sooner than one might think possible. He entered the bookstore and looked around with a shuddering realization - he'd missed this, far too immensely for any logical reason, he'd just missed it. He could feel the age of the books and he could smell the ink on their pages and the air was warm and somehow golden with dust and he felt so at home. He looked around for help, doubting there would be a section labeled "getting over your fears of magic and single parenthood" and saw a lovely young witch standing near the back of the store. He made his way toward her and said softly (with an air of his old Slytherin habits), "Excuse me?"
