I should have been more clear... the race mechanic thing has ended. The rider retired! Partially because of age and partially because racing is hella expensive and this economy is hitting the business pretty hard.
So I still work for the racing company, I just don't go to the track 25 weekends a year anymore.
You'll get a hang of the stick shift... it's the only way to drive. However, with the stop and go nightmare that is 75 during rush hour, try not to wear out your clutch :D
i'm sure this is one of the worst things to do, but if i'm on a particularly steep hill OR some 'bag is on my ass and i'm in my SWEET ASS HOT CAR OF GERMAN AND ITALIAN LOVE, i pull up the emergency brake, put it in gear when the light changes, engage the bite point, and then ease off the emergency brake.
that said, you really don't roll back as much as you think, mere inches. it's just such a weird, out-of-control feeling, though, to be rolling backwards when you want to go forwards.
Hell yeah... that is a good tip. Pops told me the same thing.
I was actually trying to do that the day I got the car... Piedmont and Peachtree... I was hanging a right onto Peachtree and it's basically a 25 or 30 degree incline. When I tried to go, I squealed the front tires and scared the shit out of a group of people on the corner waiting to cross the street. It was awesome. I was so proud. I mean embarrassed.

i found practicing in a sloopy empty lot was great. even a small sloop. anything that lets you roll back is good.
