Honestly, it's very hard to tell who's the best and who's second best, unless there's some objective criteria to evaluate. In the case you mentioned above, it's not a even a case of choosing the second best the way I see it. It's more like using you as backup - there is a difference! In the case of backup, that person may simply hop on to the next better person that comes along. Backups are always temporary, though not necessarily second best. Just my thoughts lah. Entirely subjective.
