I just don't get everyone's fascination with Pussy Galore (or Jon Spencer for that matter). I know it's supposed to be a fractured disjointed sound or whatever, but I think other bands do it better. Check out Blacktop (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:dzdgylm4xpmb). They incorporate a lot of the noise, feedback, and otherwise messy sound much better, though I'm sure they were heavily influenced by PG.

Oh, and I'm sure you'll reply with a duh, but have ya heard the Soul Jazz Tropicalia compilation? Man, I used to think surf was the hands-down winner for perfect summer music, but this is giving it a run for its money. Strangely enough, the new Super Furry Animals sounds a lot like it (I think I saw that you liked it but I ain't sure), but then it makes perfect sense when I read they actually recorded it somewhere in Brazil.

yeah im way into tropicalia, this summer ive been digesting the catalogues of caetano veloso, jorge ben, gal costa, and os mutantes. wonderful stuff.

the thing with forerunners in music such as pussy galore or what-have-you, is for sure there are newer bands that will incorporate their sound and do it better, but its less genuine in a sense. pussy galore sounds better to me because its just more of a pure mess, and before them there wasn't a whole lot of bands willing to just throw musicianship to the wayside and just jump whole-hog into trash and noise. (although of course big black, swans, the cramps, and others were embracing it too, pussy galore was more into abandon, the other bands had some structure). i dunno, man, shit's sweet. although JSBX isn't one of my favs, i kind of like extra width and orange.

I don't see the Cramps fitting in with those bands. I mean, they were pretty much a straight up rock 'n' roll band.

ps Have you heard any New Bomb Turks stuff? They're hometown boys (well, for you) and their first album (Destroy-Oh-Boy) is amazing. Sounds a lot like early Supersuckers, Lazy Cowgirls, Devil Dogs. You should give 'em a shot if you haven't already.

pps I'm seeing Os Mutantes in a few days. Don't h8.

yeah the cramps arent i guess really into the category of big black and swans but the cramps did embrace the trash aesthetic, thats why i mentioned them.

i would love to see os mutantes, but i would be afraid it would be a letdown, seeing as how they were at their peak almost 40 years ago.
