part of a mini-series. read this first, then this.

this song goes well.

when yifan gets the call from an hysterical lu han 45 minutes into one of his business lectures, he almost throws up right on the spot; eyes bulging out of his head and panic setting in, feeling like he’s been dumped in a pool full of ice cold water. he promptly ends the call and thrusts his phone back into his pocket, shoving his work and pens into his bag and slinging it over his shoulder, propelling himself from his seat and down the stairs towards the door.

“and just where do you think you’re going, mr. wu?” his professor interrupts, stopping what he was telling the class beforehand and looking at him quizzically, pushing his glasses back up his nose.

everyone turns to look at him. shit.

“sorry, sir, but i need to go. my girlfriend’s just gone into labour and-”

“labour? at your age?” he says, sneering and folding his arms across his chest like the uppity bastard that he was.

and yifan snaps, hardening his jaw and stalking up to his professor. for the last 6 months he’d had to put up with all sorts of shit from everyone around him that “they were too young to be parents” and that “he wasn’t ready to be a father”; from his mother, his father, and even a couple of his friends. sure, he was only 23 but he’d tried so hard, tried so fucking hard to get his head around the pregnancy and what his life was going to be like after the baby was born. he’d stayed up late most nights researching on the internet and getting hints and tips from people on pregnancy message boards, doing everything that was in his power to make sure that he would be a good father. he didn’t need this right now, and especially not from some geriatric fool who thought that he knew what was best for everyone.

“listen, i do not need your judgemental bullshit right now. whether you give me your blessing or not, i’m going to leave anyway. fail me, i don’t care. all i’m bothered about right now is getting to my girlfriend because i promised her that i would be there and if i miss the birth of our child then so help me god i am going to take it out on you.” yifan snarled, feeling his skin prickle with adrenaline.

his professor just gaped at him, and yifan felt a sense of superiority wash over him that he had rendered their normally arrogant teacher completely speechless. he fixed him with another hard look before wrenching the door open and bolting through it, slamming it shut behind him. an explosion of voices sounded from the classroom, and it vaguely registered that everyone on campus was going to be talking about him tomorrow, but at that moment in time all that was on his mind was getting to the hospital as fast as he could.

he sprinted out of the university gates as fast as his legs could take him, halting at the sidewalk and flagging down a taxi, jumping in and commanding the driver to take him to the chaoyang centre in frantic mandarin. the driver took in his panicked and dishevelled state and hit the gas immediately, picking up on the fact that he was probably in a hurry. when they pulled up outside the hospital, yifan ejected himself from the car and thrust a wad of yuan notes into the drivers face, thanking him and not bothering to wait for his change. the driver deserved the tip for getting him there quickly, anyway.

he burst through the hospital doors, startling the receptionist and stalking over to her in what probably looked like a very menacing manner, but he really wasn’t in the mood for politeness and pleasantries at the moment.

“maternity ward?!” he demanded, eyes wild and hands shaking.

“the-the third floor,” the receptionist said timidly, pointing in the direction of the elevator.

not bothering to thank her, he took off towards the lifts and jabbed his finger into the button that called the elevator to the floor. he tapped his foot impatiently and bit his bottom lip roughly, tasting a little bit of blood when he ran his tongue across it. the elevator doors finally opened and he rushed inside, thrusting his finger into the ‘3’ button. the doors opened on the third floor and he rushed out, wildly looking around for lu han.

he turned down a corridor just in time to see a nurse walk out of one of the side rooms holding a bundle in her arms, and he felt like the floor had opened up from beneath him.

he’d missed it. oh god he’d missed the birth of his first child and yixing was going to kill him-

“yifan! oh, thank god, you’re here.” lu han shouted down the hall when she spotted him, her hair tied up in a messy bun and wearing what looked like her pajamas. she mustn’t have had time to change from when she’d been looking after yixing that morning when yifan had left for class.

this was the maternity ward. of course there would be other babies being born today, he had just got ahead of himself for a moment.

“lu han, oh god, what happened?” he asked, relief washing over him, stopping in front of her and panting.

“it all happened so fast, fan. i went into the kitchen to make us something to eat-i swear i was only gone for like, five minutes-and she just started screaming!” she exclaimed shakily, tucking her bangs behind her ear. “so i ran back in to her and she was clutching her stomach and her pants were soaked and i didn’t know what to do, i panicked, i just completely froze up.” she carried on, tears filling her eyes and her voice trembling. “and she started screaming at me to make it stop and i-i just snapped out of it and phoned an ambulance.”

“shhh, lu. it’s okay. you did good.” he murmured, pulling her into a hug and rubbing her back soothingly.

“i’m so glad you’re here. i’ve been going crazy. they won’t tell me what’s happening.” she choked, fisting her hands into yifan’s shirt.

“i’m here now; i’ll go and ask them what’s going on.” he said, nodding at her and walking over to the nurses station.

“can i help you, sir?” the nurse at the desk asked, looking up at him away from her computer screen when he approached her.

“yeah, uh, zhang yixing? she’s my girlfriend.”

“ah, yes. she’s been screaming for you ever since she was admitted.” the nurse smiled gently. “is this your first child?”

“yeah,” yifan smiled crookedly, fingers skittering across the desk anxiously.

“down the hall and it's the third door on the left.” she said kindly, pointing him in the right direction.

he thanked her shakily and made his way back over to lu han, filling her in and letting her know that he’d tell her straight away when the baby was born. he marched down the hall, bursting through the door and stopping abruptly, taking in the slight of yixing drenched in sweat and face twisted in agony.

“oh, baby,” he gasped, walking over to her and grasping her hand tightly.

“yifan, oh god, yifan,” she groaned, looking at him with misty eyes, bottom lip trembling violently.

“i’m here, i’m here. shit, xing, i knew i shouldn’t have left you this morning.” he choked, tears welling up in his eyes.

“sir, she’s almost fully dilated. we’ll be getting ready to deliver soon.” the nurse in the room said suddenly, making yifan snap out of the trance that was just yixing, yixing, yixing. he hadn’t even noticed that she was standing there. “most woman stay in labour for quite a number of hours when having their first child. miss. zhang is lucky that she dilated so quickly.”

yifan nodded and turned his attention back to his writhing girlfriend, pushing her hair out of her sweaty face gently.

“fan, it hurts so bad,” she cried, thumping her head back against the pillow that was propping her up.

“i know, but it won’t be much longer now. we’ll be able to see our baby soon.” yifan said, trying to smile, even though seeing yixing in so much pain made him want to burst into tears.

30 more minutes went by before yixing suddenly surged forward, eyes wide and her mouth open in a shriek, clutching her stomach desperately.

“it’s coming! oh fuck it’s coming!” she wailed, back arching off the bed.

a doctor and two more nurses then came bursting through the door, unceremoniously shoving yifan out of the way and attending to a frantic yixing. yifan stood on the sidelines, shaking like a leaf and trying not to have a panic attack.

“yifan!” yixing screamed, grasping at air, yifan rushing over to her and grabbing her hand, flinching at the tight grip that she had on him.

and after 10 more minutes of hysterical tears and screaming and yifan’s hand being crushed, it was over.

a shrill cry suddenly filled the room and yifan was shook down to his very core. yixing collapsed back onto the bed, panting harshly and feeling absolutely exhausted, completely wiped out.

“congratulations; you have a healthy baby girl!” the doctor said, holding up the tiny being in his arms for the parents to see.

and yifan couldn’t say a word. every time he opened his mouth and tried to speak, nothing came out.

the doctor cut the umbilical cord and handed her to one of the nurses, who quickly wiped her over with gauze to wash away the blood, and wrapped her in a soft, lemon yellow blanket.

“yifan-yifan, she’s gorgeous. look at her, yifan,” yixing cried, taking their daughter in her arms, looking down at her with the most beautiful expression that yifan had ever seen in his life. like the little bundle in her arms was the most amazing creature that she had ever seen, love and happiness radiating from her like shockwaves after an earthquake. she was positively glowing. yifan was completely awestruck at the sight.

nothing in the world could have prepared yifan for this; seeing his beautiful partner holding their precious newborn in her arms, gazing at her with adoration and affection. absolutely nothing at all.

“have you thought of a name yet?” one of the nurses asked kindly, smiling at the sunny-looking parents.

“ming yue.” yixing answered immediately, not taking her eyes off of the baby for a second. “yifan?”

yifan gaped for a moment before smiling, “yeah, i like that.”

“that’s pretty. it suits her very much.” replied the nurse.

the staff then took their leave, yifan jumping up from his seat beside the bed and bowing to them in gratitude, blubbering and thanking them for delivering his child safely. after they had left and yifan had sat back down, yixing finally turned to him, a soft smile adorning her face. she looked drained; her face pale and bags sitting underneath her eyes, but yifan thought that she had never looked better. she looked like the proudest mother in the world.

“would you like to hold your daughter?” she asked, smiling.

yifan nodded quickly and tentatively took hold of their baby, holding her like he’d seen other people do, looking at yixing for confirmation and smiling when she nodded gently.

“hey, ming yue. i’m your daddy.” he beamed, choking on the last word, joyful tears cascading down his face. he ran his fingers softly over her little tufts of hair and the smooth skin on her tiny face, completely struck at how wonderful it felt to finally have her in his arms.

she looked like yixing.

ming yue yawned, grabbing hold of one of his fingers in her miniature hands and yifan’s heart lurched violently in his chest. he didn’t think he could ever be as happy as he was at this current moment in time. joy coursing through his body and making him feel like he was on top of the world.

“yifan?”

“i’m so proud of you, yixing. thank you so much.” yifan said quietly, not able to take his eyes away from their sleeping daughter.

“i’m proud of you too. i thought you would have freaked out more than you did, to be honest.” she laughed tiredly.

“hey, have some more faith in me, will you? i’m a pretty strong guy.”

“i know you are.” yixing whispered after a moment, eyes closing and finally succumbing to the lull of sleep.

yifan brought lu han in then, the older girl immediately bursting into tears and weeping incoherently, holding ming yue carefully and crying that she was absolutely perfect. she left after a while, saying that she was going to get some coffee and go home, and that she would swing by tomorrow to see yixing, as she didn’t want to wake her up after all she had been through.

yifan shined a smile at her and stood up on shaky legs, laying ming yue gently inside the crib that was set up on the other side of the bed, taking a moment to admire how cute she was before flopping back down into his chair a minute later.

he was awoken some time later by a nurse entering the room to check how the mother and baby were doing, apologising with a small laugh when yifan jerked awake in his seat. she left a moment later and yifan rubbed the sleep from his eyes, his gaze wandering over yixing’s still peacefully sleeping form. he pulled the chair closer to her and ran his fingers through her damp hair, grimacing when her eyes fluttered open and she started to wake up.

“yifan,” she breathed.

“hey, mama. did you sleep well?”

“i feel better than i did before. i really needed that.”

he leant forward and captured her lips in a sweet kiss, cupping the side of her neck delicately.

“yixing, i love you.” he whispered against her mouth, his lips twitching when she gasped.

he pulled back to look at her, thinking that he’d said the wrong thing, before he saw the look on her face. her lips were pulled across her face impossibly tight in a glowing smile, and she brought a hand up to stroke her thin fingers across his face gently.

“i love you too,” she spoke softly, eyes filling up with tears, before she leant forward and pressed her chapped lips to his, circling her arms around his neck.

they’d come so far. years of friendship leading all the way up to this; the birth of their daughter and the first time that they had ever said ‘i love you’ to each other. yifan could imagine the rest of his life with yixing; watching ming yue grow up to be a beautiful young woman, and them growing old and wrinkly together, still blissfully happy after all that time with each other.

their baby was finally here, and yifan couldn’t wait to start the rest of their lives together. one step at a time.

- ming yue means 'bright moon' in chinese, and i thought that it went perfectly with yixing and yifan's ship name, which means 'a vast sky full of stars'.
