As with so many of the Neocon talking points... "let's intentionally misinterpret an obscure quote in order to discredit the opposition, knowing full well that our constituency doesn't have the capacity or desire to follow up and learn the truth." :-)
Sadly, anyone who brings *up* that chestnut (and it's ilk) is pretty much relying on talking points, and "parroting" is nothing short of woefully uninformed. It's a fairly strong indicator that they would unable to participate in any kind of constructive discourse. Kinda like my Mother-in-law, who voted for Bush because he "seems like such a nice man" ... WTF? ::head-desk::
That's a pretty excellent Snopes write up. I remember that interview and I remember reading Vint Cerf's comments after it became political fodder. But, on the other hand, Gore did himself no favors after the neocon attack dogs came out. And, in many ways, Gore's stammering and staggering to "justify" his comment after the fact only fueled the fire and it is why you'll see Gore even today, kind of taking it on the chin anytime someone in media brings it up
( ... )
Absolutely... at the very least an elementary Civics test in order to vote.
But, I'm inclined to agree with your assessment, it's actually the *problem* that I had with Gore...the whole thing made him seem spineless, or at least uncertain of himself. Sad really...
