Crumb of trivia since you mentioned the horse, the scene where the rider is seen on the horizon, going from side-to-side? Was not actually Robert Mitchum: It was a midget on a Shetland pony. Srsly!

That's funny about the midget and pony, but I read that the camera man was using all sorts of forced perspective and 'old Silent tricks' throughout. I guess it's only natural they'd want Gish on the project.
