sometimes i feel really bad about the division of labor in our marriage.  i am the unkempt one.  i leave clothes out (for washing/airing efficiency), i leave dishes out (so i can wash them all at once), i'm completely unaware of what has gone bad in the fridge.  the writer thinks that i know food has gone bad and i just refuse to touch it or throw

Don't. You both work, a lot. This is efficient outsourcing.

I've a friend with two kids and her house looks terrible. She could afford a cleaning lady (is that what they're called these days?) but is too weirded out by the idea of paying someone to do what she feels she should be doing. So nothing gets done.

The only way you'll regret hiring someone is if that person turns out to be a thief or something like that. Assuming that doesn't happen, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
