I wouldn't have guessed you were one of those who really need deadlines. I'm totally that way; without a deadline nothing gets done.
A friend of mine formed a really cool group of about six of us to mutually enforce deadlines on each other and help each other complete tasks. It was great; it really forced me to work on stuff that I've been wanting to do for a long time. You might want to try doing something like that with your friends.
