#6: Minty fresh!

It looks like everyone's okay, even those who were dead.  Does anything that happens in this city have actual consequences?

Anyways, I'm looking forward to getting back to my lab--working from home isn't really an option.  And I guess I should pick up some new toothpaste while I'm out.  All I can taste is peppermint.

The only consequence seems to be when a deal is struck with the deities.

You can do that? What do people actually get out of it?

You can. Two friends of mine bargained to get their lives back. I don't know what they traded for it, though.

When you say, "get their lives back," do I want to know how literal you're being?

Maybe we have to learn to make our own consequences.

Maybe. But the point is, the deities have all the power here, were just the pawns. And it's not much fun being part of the game if you're a pawn. Or even a king or I guess I should have said queen since that's the piece with all the good moves. Anyway, right now, I feel like they're the only real players.

...the piece with all the good moves?

Well, a queen is what I'll be, so I suppose you're right about that.

And I don't intend to let the deities take my 'good moves.'

A queen, huh? Well, there are a lot of people here with 'good moves.' Good luck, I guess.

Are not the fear and pain of the past few days consequences enough? Truly I am glad that all is well.

I'm not saying I wish the damage from the injection had stayed around, because of course I don't. But it's just...some people tried to save others, and some people tried to hide, and some went on a spree killing zombies (who used to be their neighbors, it was easy to forget that during the past few days.) And now today--it doesn't really matter what anyone did or how much they lost or how scared they felt. We're all back where we started, just...mintier, in some cases.

Quite the contrary. I believe we have all come away from this experience with a deeper knowledge of ourselves and those around us. We may be back where we started physically, but the hearts of many have been changed.

For the better?

I don't really think so.
