Game of Thrones had its season finale last night three days ago and I CAN'T BELIEVE WE HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE YEAR FOR THE NEXT INSTALLMENT!!!! (I suspect I'm experiencing a fraction of what GRRM's readers feel as they wait for the next (final? is this supposed to be the final?) book in the saga. So I'm not expecting tons of pity.)
But I will say, I

Do you have the discipline to therefore not read Book 1? Erm...I am somewhat doubtful judging from how very much you adored the show.
I'm doubtful toooo!! D: Because the show was so fantastic and I'd love to look at how the story and characters come across as written as opposed to acted. I'm fairly sure it's how the actors portray Cersei and Jamie that's caused my conflicted feelings. There's a scene at the very end between Jamie and Catelyn Stark where he just seems so... I don't know, tired maybe? of what all he's done. But it's more in the way he talks than what he says, so I wonder how it comes across in the book.
It will just have to be an experiment in self-discipline, I guess. ;D
I liked Arya Stark a lot. But I am not surprised you like Sansa, I would have predicted that (had anyone asked. *grin*)Hah! That's hilarious, but yes, Sansa was right up my alley. ( ... )

But yeah, I think it's the underlying sadistic madness--Draco doesn't really want to be king and he would have listened to his mother and not wanted a beheading! And he's not an abusive husband.:-D
I've only read the first book so I knew what was coming here but not what's next!

I'd also say the tv show (I have no idea on the book) does a better job setting up Joffrey's nastiness. When he causes the death of an innocent animal, that animal is unquestionably innocent. To be fair, I was predisposed towards Draco by the time the Buckbeak incident came around. But the death of Lady was so definitely wrong and Joffrey so definitely reveled in it. As he reveled in his end-of-season splurge of cruelty. Poor Draco wasn't even up to a casual crutio, iirc. It did strike me that Draco was supposed to come across as a Joffrey type, though. Interesting that one worked so well and the other not so much!

So it is possible to read one book and stop. Hmmm... Perhaps there's hope...

I read the four books in three weeks (if you can stop while reading, you're a better person than I am) and am on the local library's list for book five. The series has it all: political intrigue, religious upheaval, magic, characters you love to love and love to hate, and the overpowering need to know what happens next.

Hee! Yeah, it's going to be a challenge. My current strategy is to wait until just before season 2 of the tv series and then read the first book. We'll see if it works. (Or if I can wait that long to start, for that matter. *g*)
