Stand back! I'm about to meta...

There's a controversial drama out there in k-drama land. So of course I have thoughts. These are them.

I started watching I Miss You for intellectual reasons. The melodrama, Nice Guy, ended with an unfortunate whimper, passing on what I thought had been an interesting plot-line. So I was in no mood for another heavy melo. And everything I'd heard ( Read more... )

I agree with you! And I'm shocked, a bit, that more people don't seem to think so.

I do wonder if being surprised by the rape scene threw some people off. (I knew about it coming in so it didn't shock me as much as I imagine it would if you weren't expecting it.) The level of actual anger directed at the show makes me wonder if that's it.

I do think people were surprised and then angry, because they weren't expecting it. The scene itself was not really graphic, so I don't think that can be it. I found it very sad and moving and not exploitative.

Now I'm going to catch up on the latest eps!

Oh, enjoy the catch up! I will not say anything so as to not spoil. :)

I was so impressed with how well they shot the rape scene. So that we got the whole horror of it, but without it being graphic or exploitative. But I wonder if because rape so rarely happens in k-dramas, especially to the female lead -- just that it happened was enough to offend? As you say, the anger coming from it being so unexpected.

Also! I found a link to an article, "MBC Drama Attempts to Redefine Rape in South Korea," that suggests I Miss You is making their point. Which is so cool!
