Yesterday in the morning when I took Rusty out before work he seemed fine to me. He could walk & he went potty outside, he did both. When I got home from work & I went to Rusty's cage to let him out to go potty, I saw that he wasn't moving at all. He was just lying there. Rusty was still alive because you could see his chest rising up & down.
I had to give Rusty a bath last night because he had poop on him from him pooping in his cage. When I was giving Rusty a bath he would ever once in awhile let out a bark but not a consistent bark like he normally would. Also when I was bathing him he would just lie there & not to anything. After I was done bathing Rusty, I rapped him up in towels & lying him on his big pillow. Also when I took Rusty out of his cage you could see stuff coming out of his eyes. After Rusty's bath & lying him on his pillow I tried to get him to eat or drink but he wouldn't. Then I thought maybe he might eat something softer so I tried to get him to eat some bread but he wouldn't even eat that. Then I called my mom & told her about Rusty. She told me to hang up & call the vet. I called the one that Rusty has gone to before & told the lady what my problem was but she said that the vet has left for the day. She told me to call the 86th VCA because they have a vet there 24 hours. So, I did call that vet & told the lady on the phone what was wrong with Rusty & that I think he needs to be put down. When I got there I told them that I think he (Rusty) needs to be but down. Then they took me to one of the vet's rooms, so I laid Rusty on the table & file out the paper work. Then the lady asked me what I wanted to do with his body. I ask her what are my options were & she said that I could have have his body back because some people like to bury there pets. But I don't have any place around here to do that (thinking about it as the lady is telling me). Then she said that I could have Rusty cremated & get his ashes back. I liked that ideal but when I asked how much I didn't want to spend that much. So they said the cheapest way is to have him cremated & just have his ashes spread there at the vet's office. But when they do spread his ashes the owners aren't there. They do it themselves. Also they asked me if I wanted to be in the room when they put him to sleep & I said yes. They took Rusty out of the room for a second to put on a catheter. When the vet came back I asked her if she thinks there could be anything done for him. She said that he was really sick & there was nothing she could do which I could already figure out but I still wanted to ask. The vet had to put two different substances in Rusty. One was pink & the other was clear. Then the vet listen to his heart & told me that he's gone & that he's in a better place. The vet told me that I could stay there as long as I needed to. I did think about taking some pictures before I went to the vet but I forgot until I thought about it after Rusty was up out. So I took some pictures of him there at the vet after he was out. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. He was a family member & my friend. He lived to be 16 & was going to turn 17 in Feb.
I wouldn't mind some day getting another dog but that dog wont ever replace Rusty.
Today my worked called to ask if I could work but I was sleeping sort of at that time. I did hear the phone ring but I didn't answer it. Eventually I went back to sleep & when I got up for good I listened to the message that was left. Then I called my work & know one answered so I just left a message. I really did feel like I would have been in good shape to go in. They wanted me to work because someone go in a car wreck that morning & couldn't come in. They called me because Thursdays are my days off from both jobs & they know that.
