Because I always write about my Bury Your Dead shows. And this one was definitely worth documenting.
So I got there just after doors open, finding a great parking spot on the road just off the exit, get right in, and there's like thirty people there and there's hugs gaps on the barrier in front of the stage. So I just headed over and claimed my spot and called Jenny until the first band started. First band was actually fairly decent, I'm assuming they're some local band. I had fun watching the guitarist with all his solos. But still, they were the first of six bands, four of which I didn't really care about. So I wasn't really thrilled to have them play.
It took them about ten minutes to tear down and set up for the first band I'd actually heard of, which was Destro. They were blah. Like, predictable metal with a bunch of fat guys running around trying to get the crowd - if you want to call it that - to form a pit. There were like eight people running around in a circle for a little while, seriously there weren't enough people. They played a really short set too, thankfully.
Then My Children My Bride came out, and I swear at least three of them had ridiculous gauged ears. Like, the guy on my left made a comment about how you could fit a tennis ball through the vocalist's ears. They are fairly decent, but my listening to cd didn't help out a ton. I know they sang Faithless, Headshot, and Waves of Oppression. And Boris the Blade, because I knew one line of that song. Again, spent watching the guitarist in front of me, which was extremely impressive.
As Blood Runs Black finally came out, and they were fairly decent as well. Their bassist was so tiny compared to the rest of them and he totally played with this attitude, it was cute. This was the first band the crowd actually started getting into, so there was a little bit of moshing and moving and it was the first time I actually had someone invade my personal space. Weird. Before they started one of their guitarists was playing up the crowd, giving them beers and water. He said "You guys don't have to like us, but you have to go crazy because I'm giving you beer, right?" and he was just being crazy all around. At one point he spit into the gap between the barrier and the stage, which turned out to be right where one of the photographers was, and he kept apologizing to the guy as he was playing.
After forever and a day of setting up Mark's drums and tuning while all the guys were offstage, Bury Your Dead finally came on. I was screaming "Bury Your Fucking Dead" and clearly the guys next to me were lame and had no idea what was going on. Actually they were pretty lame in general. But anyway, BYD was just as amazing as I remember, and Myke and Bubble are my favorites because they work the crowd. Both of them definitely smiled at me and grabbed hands, which was trickier due to the barricade. But Myke and I screamed at each other plenty of times, and when I caught Bubble's eye a couple times he smiled, and once he made this cute, head-shaking 'oh you' face because I knew all the words. ♥ Anyway, both of them mouthed appropriate lines to me, I think Myke sang 'does she know she has our help?', and Bubble did something about being all he needed, I forget exactly what song. But they played a really good mix: Top Gun, Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, The Outsiders, The Color of Money, and Risky Business from Cover Your Tracks; House of Straw, A Glass Slipper and Twelfth Stroke of Midnight from Beauty and the Breakdown; and Sympathy Orchestra, Hands to Hide the Shame and Fever Dream from their new one. I love the singing on the new cd so that was really cool. Then they ended with Losin' It, as always. I debated leaving my spot to see if they were at the merch table, but I ended up sticking around, which I'm really glad I did.
Again, it took a million years but Unearth did eventually come out, first Trevor caught a beer that was thrown across the stage and made everyone cheer, but then they all came out and they were fantastic as well. Ken spent most of his time on our side of the stage, and was quite possibly just as strange as Adam D from KsE. He was making faces and pretending to smoke or pick his nose or hump things, and of course would spit water out at us. But then one time he decided to pretend to pee using a water bottle, and basically got me completely soaked. I kind of just shook it off and continued headbanging, probably getting everyone else wet, but he kind of laughed at me, and then went over to one of the roadies or whatever and came back with a towel for me. Very nice of him, I hung onto that. And throughout the rest of the show he and Buz left the stage and then came back, he would carefully put down the mic stand so that the roadie would have to pick it up, and he jumped all over said roadie when roadie was trying to support Trevor when Trevor was standing half on the barrier to get closer to the crowd, on top of just making random faces. Really, the guy was super entertaining. They played Giles, Endless, This Glorious Nightmare, Zombie Apocalypse, Sanctity of Brothers, This Lying World, Only the People, March of the Mutes, Black hearts Now Reign and Dividers, in that order. Which I know because I got a set list from Mr. Replacement Drummer, who might be Derek, I'm not sure. Anyway, then Buz hopped down and was shaking people's hands, and then Ken did, and when Ken got to me and I told him how awesome he was and he said something and then he pulled me in for a hug, and he said "I love you!" so I told him I loved him too. He's so cute. So me and my towel and setlist went over to the merch table.
Myke was standing by BYD's table, so I tried to make my way over and he goes "Hey, You!" and gives me a hug. So I told him how amazing they are, as always, and how I've seen them all the time and asked if they're really coming back soon. Myke said yes and the guy next to him (who made have been Slim, I'm not sure) said yes, they always are on tour. I told him that I love that because I get to see them all the time, and I told Myke the new cd is awesome, and then he gave me another hug and told me to drive safely. Aw. And then I made it out without being attacked! Quite a successful concert experience overall, despite having to go alone. Fourth time for BYD and I just want to see them again even sooner.
And just for fun, here's some pictures of my arm the day after:
My arm looks broken here but really it's only problem is that giant purple thing
