It's about that time of year...thought this might be fun?

1. What have you and your horse(s) accomplished this year, now that we're approaching the end of it?  What are you proud of and pleased about?

2. What would you like to get done in 2009?

This year I've got a whole lot better at everything I do. I feel so much more competent than I was a year ago- the lunge lessons with Julian have got my seat reliable and independent, clinics with Tom Widdicombe got me working to get my basics really solid and to pick up on every detail while clinics with Steve Halfpenny helped me to understand how I can start adding a little finesse and accuracy to everything I do and how to start picking things up to a higher energy level and use what is available to me there. Of course, going faster also gives one less margin for error, which is why I've attained my first proper horse-related injury and fall this year ( ... )

1. I rehabbed my mare from lameness and got her sound and painfree.

Then I hacked my formerly "spooky" mare past a garbage truck. With airbrakes. And she didn't spook!

I've been hacking her out nearly every day, usually alone, to help build back her topline, and beyond the odd bad day, she's been very very good and safe.

2. I'd like to start schooling again. For a long time I couldn't school her because her stiff hocks meant I couldn't do circles with her. But I would like to do dressage schooling now that she's sound again and continue our hacks, maybe hacking her up Pendle Hill next summer.

Do you know what was causing the lameness?

It's a long story. Before I bought her, she had injured her sacroiliac. She had a long career in show jumping and cross country before I owned her. She re-injured it in the field while horsing around and tore a muscle. It didn't help that our fields here are very steep and hilly.

Then she got put on boxrest while I was rehabbing her and because of the long boxrest she got a bone spavin in her hocks, grrr. But we treated that as well and she's sound and back on turn out again, although winter turn out at my yard is restricted and I'm on the waiting list for another yard with 7 days a week winter turn out.

Well done for getting that sorted- sacro injuries seem to be incredibly hard to rehabilitate and successfully getting back to working soundness after all that is quite an achievement.

1. I'm really proud of my 8-years-old gelding Friesian. I've had him for one year now and we start everything from zero. I really mean zero ( ... )

1. This year is the year Flynn turned from a baby pony into a real horse. We went to our first dressage shows this year, including a big rated show away from home, and finished the season with a respectable 63% and second place at Training Level. My former Giraffe Pony learned to go on the bit (and I learned how to keep her there ...), and I got her started over fences. It's been so amazing to watch her grow up -- and it's great that I've gotten to do the work myself (albeit with a great deal of help on the ground from my wonderful and exceptionally patient trainer). Flynn was a snotty baby, but she's turned into a really awesome young horse, and a fun ride to boot ( ... )
