Oh.. I guess I better write something here, rather than lurking and/or surfing all around the nets in my usual braindead state. WHat can I say, I've become addicted to the TV all over again. We got that feature where you can watch select Netflix videos right on the TV, rather than only on the little computer monitor. Guess what movies Josh has ( Read more... )

You're further with gardening than I am this year. We're having a long wet and cool spring again, so the slug army is on the march and plants aren't growing very fast. Except grass.

Could also be that your area is in a growing zone behind my area too.

Its also been a wierd spring here, thanks to El Nino. We got summer like weather in May, and not too much rain (until just recently). That's been making many of the plants here get a little confused! My black-eyed susans and coneflowers are huge! The roses were loving the early heat and had a nice spread of blooms a couple weeks ago. And I can not believe how big my cucumber plant has gotten in one week. *laugh*

Its true, you are in a higher zone (we're at 5b here), but my plants are not usually so far behind in growth as they are this year. The herbs in the pots out front have barely grown beyond what they were when they were transplanted a few weeks ago, for instance, and I'm struggling to get the directly planted seeds to go. The daffodils in the back still have yet to bloom, tho the ones in front did early last month. Happens, tho, when the sunny days are rare in a month.

Wow... it seems like you had gotten bumped back to a 4 zone this year. All over our daffodills and tulips have finished blooming early in May, and turned yellow now. I just trimmed off the ones that had bloomed first last week. All the June flowers are getting ready to 'burst' here, it's been so warm.

Dude that sucks about the mail order plants. Huh. I never did get around to ordering anything myself.

Good to hear you got a veggie garden of sorts going. I ran out of time and manpower to dig out the beds in the backyard for mine. Maybe next year.

Yeah... I have noticed this about plants. The bigger they are, the more expensive they become. However, I have found that Lowes will take their distressed plants and mark them down by 50% or more. Some of these are still salvagable, so I have landed some pretty good deals that way.

I had found last year that the home owners who first had this house had turned many spots into nice garden beds, by digging out the sandy clay dirt and putting in some really nice dark soil. It took me awhile to find the strip of good soil on the south side because they had completely resown it with grass.

That helped alot... it was so loose all I had to do was turn over the soil (put the grass top underneath) last fall. Then this spring all that grass decomposed so I just had to break it up a little when planting the seeds/seedlings. If it wasn't for the existing garden soil, I would have been less motivated. That clay soil is hard to dig, and veggies don't grow too well in it!
