[IC Information]
Character Name: Squall “Leon” Leonhart
Series: Kingdom Hearts I, II, and Chain of Memories
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider.
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Species: Human
Sexuality: …Whatever.
Appearance
Upon first sighting, it wouldn’t be surprising if a stranger mistook Leon’s obsession of belts and leather to hide a bondage loving streak. Leon is slimly muscular with messy shoulder length brown hair, silver-blue eyes, and a distinctive scar running from the top of his right eye to the bottom of his left. Aside from encasing himself in tight leather pants that have zippers all the way up the sides (yes, you read that right- he can be zipped right out of his pants,) and central zip up black boots, Leon sports criss-crossing studded brown and black belts slung low on his hips, with three smaller belts encircling his left forearm. Black T-lined gloves protect his hands. Griever, a lion motif pendant on a Y silver chain, hangs around his neck, the only other jewelry he wears besides the plain studs in his ears.
He wears a white form-fitting t-shirt under a short-sleeved zipper waist jacket, the collar liberally lined with white fur. A red tribute to Griever is displayed on the left sleeve, while vivid red wings adorn the back of his jacket. It is unclear if the wings are a tribute to Rinoa Heartilly, who has white wings decorating the back of her blue duster, as she does not appear in the game series.
For weaponry, Leon normally wields a gunblade, which is exactly what it sounds like- a hybrid between a sword and a revolver. Leon’s favored relic Griever is also present on the weapon, acting as a dangling key chain from the pommel of the handle. In Final Fantasy VIII, the difficult to wield weapon delivers an additional vibrating punch when the trigger is pulled at the right point of impact from the blade, allowing additional damage to be inflicted on Squall’s foe. The same concept should be held here. Upon his arrival to Manhattan, however, Leon will be deprived of his trusty weapon.
Personality
"We may never meet again, but we'll never forget each other."
When we first meet Leon in Kingdom Hearts, he displays loner tendencies and a callous front. Brooding is the word that aptly fits him at this point, though with the retrieval of his world and the experiences and hardships he’d faced until then with his friends, Leon ‘lightens up’. More prone to smiles and good humor, Leon now readily displays his care and concern for his friends. He is also protective over the ones he cares for and is responsible for, taking his role as the leader very seriously. He is especially close to Aerith and Cloud, for reasons known only to him.
Upon first meeting him, Leon can seem aloof and reserved. His respect is something that is earned. His friendship, once given, is steadfast and deep, a bond that is forged for life. He will go to all lengths to help his friends and demonstrates that by repeatedly helping Sora during his quest to restore all worlds and defeat the Heartless. It can also be said that such a drive stems from his guilt of failing his family and friends “before”, a drive to right the wrongs and earn forgiveness through his actions.
Leon is a man who believes in efficiency. Why use thirty words when you can use ten? As such, he’s honest and to the point, not one to dally around when there is work to be done. Leon fully devotes himself to causes he believes in, whether it involves fighting against the Heartless Invasion, flying to other disaster areas to pick up strays or to offer his help, counterattacking Organization XIII, or rebuilding Radiant Garden, the newly reclaimed Hollow Bastion that had been decimated during the Heartless Invasion.
His version of fun times includes registering for fighting tournaments and canonically beating down the Keyblade Master. It’s no surprise that while he’s controlled out of the ring, he tends to mildly taunt his opponents in them.
Abilities
“Think you can handle this many?”
The Leon from Kingdom Hearts is a far cry from the one in Final Fantasy VIII in the ability to summon and cause major junction damage; in fact, Leon’s most notable skills involve his ability to fight in hand-to-hand combat, his stamina, and most importantly, his strength in wielding the gunblade. He’s an agile fighter who naturally falls into leadership roles whether he intends to or not.
Leon can also summon balls of flaming death in an attack called Fire Blast, many of which he lobs at your head if you’re not quick on your feet. This attack gives warning when four points of coalescing light merge to form a ball of fire. It’s assumed that Leon can call upon this spell casting as long as his MP (magic level) isn’t depleted.
In Manhattan, Fire Blast will be limited. He will only be able to cast this spell a few times, at the end of which he’ll feel a tired strain on his body. He will not be able to use the spell again until rest is obtained or sufficient time has been lapsed.
Weaknesses
“Looks like things are worse than we thought. A lot worse.”
Leon puts up a rough and tough exterior, but is obviously a sucker for anything cute and fluffy. Aside from letting Stitch crawl all over the computers in Kingdom Hearts 2, Leon also lets Aerith and Tifa push him around in their own way. (He’d rather people refer to it as ‘deferring’ though, if they had to refer to it as anything at all.) He also tends to disassociate himself from things that make him feel guilt and shame, this trait demonstrated when he changed his name from Squall to Leon to separate himself from the helpless person who failed to save anyone when his world fell.
Also mentioned above in personality, Leon is aloof and distant upon meeting someone new. He remains reserved until he’s able to assess the person’s sincerity and remains hard pressed to blindingly trust others, especially when the betrayal of that trust can backfire and harm his friends. This can lead to others viewing him as unfriendly, uncooperative or intimidating, and can get in the way of social relations.
History
“It’s not that simple.”
Prior to his arrival in Manhattan, Leon was the leader of the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee (later renamed as Radiant Garden), and of the Heartless Resistance.
He was born Squall Leonhart of Radiant Garden, the son of a well-liked soldier named Laguna Loire who was strangely clumsy and absentminded. Between Laguna and his sister, Ellone, Squall lived a happy if somewhat strange life on Radiant Garden up until the Heartless invasion unleashed by Ansem’s dabbling in darkness. It can be assumed that he knew Ansem, having seen the man with his father and having expressed his disappointment in the man.
For the shame of failing to protect his family and friends from the Heartless invasion, and for the guilt of being one of the few survivors of what was known as the annihilation of his world, Squall shed his original name and went by Leon. Until his world is restored and the Heartless are defeated completely, Leon will remain dissociated from his past identity.
Upon waking in Traverse Town with other refugees- Cid, Aerith, and Yuffie, Leon immediately set on securing the perimeter of the town, protecting it from the encroaching Heartless and Maleficent. He had already lost one home; he wasn’t about to lose another. During the time between his arrival at Traverse Town and Sora’s advent, Leon sought out survivors and refugees of worlds besieged by Heartless, traveling by gummi ships (an air space ship allowing interplanetary travel) to retrieve them and relocate them on Traverse Town.
Leon was also the first person Sora met upon his arrival in Traverse Town. Skeptical at the suitability of Sora as the Keyblade Master, Leon challenged the teen to a fight, defeating him and then dragging him to the Resistance’s safehouse. It was through Leon and Yuffie that Sora learned about the Heartless and his destiny as the Keyblade Master.
Leon’s aid to Sora became par for course, the man offering Sora much needed information when necessary, some of that information possibly passed to him through King Mickey, whom Leon had gained confidence of. Sora learned about the Keyholes of each world from the man, including the importance of the Keyblade in sealing them. Sora was alerted to the existence of Ansem’s journal and Malificent’s plans by Leon.
Sora’s return to Hollow Bastion after the first sealing found Leon as the leader of the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee. Leon continued his role of a helper by lending his gunblade in the fight against the hordes of Heartless descending on the Ravine Trail. Prior to this, Leon had also fought back against Organization XIII and the Nobodies, determined to protect his home and friends as best as he can.
Leon was still in the process of rebuilding Radiant Garden when a part of the castle came down on his crew. Acting on instinct, Leon sent one of the volunteers to fetch Merlin and Aerith, rushing headlong into the debris as he gave the order to dig out the injured. It was too bad that the dilapidated floor didn’t hold, collapsing under the additional weight to pitch Leon down below…
…to land smack dab in the middle of modern day Manhattan. Joy.
