Laptop Troubles...

This has been going on for...well, half a year, really... My laptop -- a Sony Vaio which I dearly adore when it works right -- would function for a while, pretty normally, and then the power would start cutting out suddenly. There's really not been any distinct pattern to it, and at this point I think it really isn't overheating; from how it acts ( Read more... )

I'd think you'd not want files that are important to be stored only on a laptop, particularly not one having issues anyway. You should back them up a little at a time if needed. Put them on DVDs, onto a domain, whatever.

And if you plan ahead you can probably avoid being worked over by Best Buy on the replacement. It's not economically feasable to build a laptop up. It's better to get one together, and you've the opportunity to get one for free. It might be worth not getting the plan on the replacement if you think you'd rather repair it yourself, but just hold them to specific features like insisting that you NEED a built in graphics card at least equal to your old one and a widescreen display, etc and you can probably reject any replacements they may suggest which you don't like.

Well, if I accept a free one from them...

...there's a nice Sony widescreen model listed in their "Buy Christmas Gifts From Us" catalogue which, incidentally, looks to be about the same price I paid for my current beloved Sony Vaio...

And I'd probably insist on that model. I don't feel inclined to be nice, since they seem to have sent it back without testing it in addition to failing to register that it shipped. (To those who don't know: I spent around a week having to piss away time trying to get them to find a laptop that, due to their habit of returning it with missing feet, had gained a distinctive appearance and -- and this is the truely fucked-up part -- had gained this trip a lable on the cover with my name on it.)
