I spent a bit of free time on campus looking around and discovered a few things...

I found a couple companies which seem to actually be capable of repairing my problem. Neither give an estimate, though...but I wasn't actively looking, either.

I found out that I likely should mention to the people at Best Buy/Geek Squad that those feet they keep

I think you're making this far more complicated than it has to be

1. My problem is that they ain't doing their job.

2. Um...Elf...that's exactly what I did the one time I did let them backup my data. In fact, I'd asked repeatedly just how specifically they needed the location to look for some of what I requested backed up -- and got merely my Desktop, my Documents folder, and my Outlook Express records on the backup. This is the sort of thing which ensures a customer shan't be a repeat customer
