Paid Fanfic *laughs*

Someone posted a link to this over at FM. Thought I'd share:

Post on fanfiction, money and feminism, oh my!

I kind of skimmed the post and some of the comments on it. I find it insulting that some people in that post and thread think women can only write fanfic. Boo to them. Yes, I used to write fics, but writing my own stuff has been more rewarding. I'm no where near ready to publish yet, but I'm much closer to that goal since quitting fanfic.

Now if people want to write fanfiction, then fine, go ahead. It may help your writing if you apply yourself, but it'll never be the same experience as writing your own fiction. You have that much more to plan out with original fiction. I don't care how far you have "spun off" from the other author's work, as long as it's fanfiction there is a piece/parts you started with. Us original fiction writers start from scratch. Sure an idea in the paper might tickle the muse, but it's just a starting idea. It's different then taking someone else's character(s) or setting and making up a new plot.

When I wrote fanfiction I never finished a single story. But now with my original work I have the first draft of my first novel written (in two months). Sure it's only a first draft, but it's a complete story ready for the revision phase. There are plenty of things that need fixing, but even as I write the draft for my next novel I find that I'm making less mistakes.

I'm also planning on doing a Science Fiction (SF) novel in the near future. I've started outlining possible scenes and working with my two main characters. Every now and then I think about everything I'll need for my future world (with multiple populated planets) and it feels overwhelming. Between thinking about language, cultures, technology, religion, and all those sorts of things that are needed to make it all work together. (Yes, SF is more then just kick ass space ships or bad ass aliens XD).

But ya, if all you write is fanfic, then don't complain about it making women poor. Step up and challenge yourself to write something original. Sure the first few things may suck, but it's part of the learning process. There are parts of writing that you don't really get a good grasp on until you write your own stuff.

(yes, the "you/your” isn't aimed at anyone in particular. It's just there while I ramble.)

random, ranting, writing
