It seems that many people think 'a statement' needs to be made. While I am not much in the mood of caring what people think, I agree in this case.

To show how out of it I am, I have no idea what you need to make "a statement" about.

It's the ongoing semi-hysterical over-reaction to Elizabeth Moon's post here, which has resulted now, over a month later, in her invitation to appear as guest of honor at Wiscon being revoked.

I don't know that I'd call it an over-reaction; I think that if one is going to be offensive in public, one can't really complain if other people are offended and no longer want to be associates. It's the same kind of thing people in America said about my grandparents and great-grandparents, and people in Europe still say. I don't see why it's any better in other contexts.
