Download applications online. Many major places have them. Even if you don't want to work there or anything, you can at least tell your dad "I filled out some applications, but didnt get out to apply much b/c I was waiting for the roof guy..."

Flip over the canoe to dump the water. Then if there is a snake, it will be alarmed by the rushing water and go away.
